Hmm, an offensive comment questioning my sexuality appeared in an earlier posting of mine. I need to find out how to check the IP address of the person, in order to get some idea of who it is

To look up the IP address I would just use http://ip-lookup.net/ though it won't tell you much.

On the off-chance that they have edited Wikipedia you can try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and see if that throws up any clues!

You can also turn on a function in LJ that disables anonymous posting and tracks all IP addresses. Won't help you figure out who sent the message, but will make idiots think twice in the future.
