So I was in Finland for a few days this week. I had to go to Riga for work and decided to take a couple of extra days off and fly to Finland (which is really rather cheap from Riga!), just for the hell of it. It was lovely. First I hung out with emiliachi for an evening, eating great Asian food and watching "Lost in Translation", and just talking a lot. ( Read more... )

Ah, Helsinki, how I miss thee! The best thing about that city is that it's safe. There are no bad neighborhoods, Finns are nice:)
Sorry about the burglary:( It makes sense that they would do that to the apartments on the first floor, but not yours, sure it wasn't one of the neighbors? ;P

Ha, that's what the crazy lady on the first floor said when Selmer spoke to the neighbors about burglary. She was sure it must've been an inside job. :D I think they would've taken much bigger things if it had been one of the neighbors, they wouldn't have to carry our big tv that far, wouldn't have needed to really run away... :D

in vienna it is very common that apartments are being broken into and robbed at daytime when everyone is at work! and they usually got to the apartments on top (where it is rather unlikely someone intrudes while on the ground or first floor someone may come enter the building and pass). also i think who would notice they are thieves when they walk in the staircase??? i have no idea how it is in holland but in vienna you don't know by far who lives in the buildings or who just visits or has other intentions...

what on earth is an e-reader??? i seriously have no clue :s

That's a good point, about being less likely to be discovered by passersby on the fourth floor! I hadn't thought about that... Our apartment building is quite small, so we do have a pretty good idea who lives here and who doesn't as there aren't that many people. And if people would come running out of an apartment with stuff in their hands, it would be kind of suspicious. :D

An e-reader is an electronic device you can use to read books digitally. Maybe you know it under a different name?! I can't imagine you've never heard of the device. :D See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-book_reader.

Oh, so sorry to hear about robbers in your house! We had the same nasty experience happening to us several years ago: we also lived on the 4th floor and they came in from the closed window! They were quick and made a whole mess inside the apartment.... I wasn't living at home back then, but it was horrible for my mother... :(
At least they did not steal anything of high value from you!

But it's good you got to return to Finland... I have missed the country and my friends there a lot lately and have been thinking about travelling abck tehre soon, but I can't find the right time/flights! :/
How's Riga? I have been curious about visiting there some day...

I want to go back to Finland again too, maybe we should travel together? :D It's always easier to make real plans and booking tickets when there's other people involved. :D

Riga is a nice city. It has a very Scandinavian feel to it, with similar architecture in the old city and a lot of Scandinavian companies (for example banks and stores), but there are also a lot of Russians living in Riga (I think about 50% of the population has a Russian background), so that makes for an interesting mix. The old town is quite nice to walk around in and there are some museums and stuff like that. The opera is supposed to be really good as well. :D
