I think we simply aren't prepared for parenting in our society. Being really, absolutely selfless (in the sense of being unaware of self, of not needing self) is discouraged to the point of being absent in our culture. They are expecting up to 6000 refugees here in Albuquerque in the next few days. They are accepting donations at the downtown convention center; they need clothes, towels, sheets, blankets, children's toys. They also need places for these people to stay for the longer haul, and the city info line is telling people to register on katrinahousing. ( Read more... )

Wow, July 4th come and gone. It was fun -- we had a little dinner with mostly family and sat out on the back porch. Lots of ground fireworks for the kiddos.
