On a completely random note, I will say one thing positive about singers who don't have a great voice.  It doesn't really deteriorate with age:).  Sorry, been listening to Mark Knopfler, and while I do very much enjoy his music, it's not so much for his lovely trained voice....

Going to go om nom on some more music now:)

There's a reason Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen (among others) have had long and successful musical careers - and their singing voices aren't necessarily one of them.

(Although Tom did have a pretty smooth voice on his early albums.)

There are some songs and styles that just don't come across with a beautiful voice.
