Because it's not nice for someone to call you retarded, but it's okay for you to call something gay...really, both terms are equally insulting to gay/retarded people. Being gay or retarded isn't something bad, or something to be ashamed of. It's really ignorant for you to say something like that.

i know what it means to be homosexual and i have an understanding of what it is to be mentally disabled or challenged. they are not disses.
