Ah, I should have known. When you say "angst" you don't mess around. What a portrait of barely-concealed anguish. This line:

No forced optimism about their future, the horizon as far off as ever, nothing in the middle distance but the next hotel room and the next song in Kris’s notebook.

Any comfort in their lovemaking is broken by their inability to take their love into the real world. And when Kris slips his ring off, I find myself hating him a bit, lol. Probably because in your story, I've stopped trusting him. Ouch...
