God save the crescent city

I have spent the last several days walking around in a haze. For those of you who chose to remain blissfully unaware, the nations greatest city (greatest city period.) is not only in shambles, but the humanity there has crumbled into a state of dispare unimaginable to Americans. For those of you who also don't know -- while I myself hail from ( Read more... )

9:53 A.M. - LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Hilary Duff has pledged to donate $250,000 to help Hurricane Katrina victims on the Gulf Coast. The 17-year-old singer-actress will give $200,000 to the American Red Cross and $50,000 to USA Harvest, which is supplying food to shelters, according to a statement released Thursday by publicist Cece Yorke. The latter donation will amount to more than 300,000 cans of food being provided to victims.

Duff encouraged fans to bring canned food donations to her concerts and to give money to charities.

my best friend's father loaded up a car full of humanitarian supplies and started driving from massachusetts. that's a 25+ hour trip, each way. I'm sending my entire next paycheck to some friends that lost everything. one of my other friends is already organizing a charity concert in memphis. get over this southern persecution thing.

All of those things are wonderful, and I am sure will be joyfully recieved. However.. had this happened in new york or dc? (also a poor southern city, but hey one with better political connections) The response (from the government especially) would have been much different.

Although i am fuming about the reaction by FEMA and many other branches of the government, i think there are MUCH greater logistic issues with a city with a geography ans sociology like that of New Orleans. With ANY other city in the country hurricane flooding would at least wash back out to sea, or at least downhill. It's the worst possible city to be hit by this sort of thing, and that would be the same if it were situated in the South, the North, or Thailand for that matter. New Orleans is the busiest port in the country, and the fifth busiest in the world by volume shipped. It is vital to not only the petrolium industry (as we can already witness) but to the central agricultural industry (which we will witness in the months to come ( ... )

well I know I am mostly on edge, and was probably looking for a fight. And I never mean to offend, even if I do like to run my mouth. Though we do not speak often, I hold you in high regard, so hopefully we can move past this..

No need to be sorry. Anger and frustration are only that, and it dosn't matter. I just feel like had this happened somewhere else in this country the response would have been faster and whatnot...and by no means am I happy with the federal government's response becaucse I'm not. Now all we can do is hope and pray..
