Title: "Dangerous Fruit"

Mom used to say they make you practice putting condoms on bananas.  I’ve never even seen a condom.  I read somewhere that you can blow them up like balloons.  It really sounds difficult if you have to put a banana inside a balloon.  Balloons have such small necks!  I wonder how long they give you to get the ( Read more... )

So much of this was non-fiction for me. I can't take a lot of credit for just repeating what I already know:)

Thanks for making it all come to life. Your entry reminded me of the human heart behind some people who seem cruel and uncaring. It's something I need to remember frequently.

I changed several big details but I homeschooled from 2nd grade until the second nine weeks of 9th grade. My parents enrolled me in a private school but, reflecting on that and watching my kids, it seems to me that many things about culture come more naturally if they are picked up little by little over time.

Another thing I have realized is how afraid my parents are of things that really are not as they have been told they are. I wonder sometimes why people like to teach others to fear fellow humans rather than see them as human with hearts and skin and feelings. Fear can be a healthy emotion or a dangerous weapon. It took me a long time to realize that.

I know exactly what you mean about making fear into a weapon. The words we use as parents can be very powerful, whether we realize it or not.
