I happened upon your lj from the musica_obscura comm. I love ukranian gypsy punk, world inferno, the shaggs, sleepy time g. m., gogol bordello, firewater, etc. etc. I just happened upon klaus nomi on monday (how on earth did he escape my notice before now, I wonder?) I'm checking out the rest of the bands on that page now.

Bands you might like: cinema strange, nina hagen (with whom you're probably already familiar, but since you hadn't mentioned her...), and the handsome family (who aren't so much *strange* as just generally *good*).

I really like The Handsome Family, actually!!
I'd love to hear what you think of Klaus Nomi. Isn't he totally fantastic? The range of his voice (I believe he's a contra-tenor) is incredible. I'm glad you found my community enjoyable. Look forward to hearing from you more soon :>

in that case, I shall go see Nick Farr next week, solely on your recommendation.

Klaus Nomi is incredible. At work on Monday I was assigned to watch The Nomi Song. This guy, the department head, a guy I don't know well at all, handed me the tape and said, "I think of all people, you'll like this". I think most things are crap, so I was pretty skeptical, but I was speechless five minutes in. I think a good way to measure the worth of something is how much it gives you the shivers, and by the time I got to his "vaudville" performance, the back of my neck was on fire.

Where did you learn about him?

Hehe Nick Farr is actually not a musician. he is a good friend of mine, who is doing a "tour" to see all his friends in the US.

Hi, its Kate. I met you at the China Mieville reading, and we ate at the Citris Club.

Hi there. I added you, and thank you for the kind mention in ohmeohmy's Quebec post.

I think I may have added you once before, but I was certainly intimidated by friends only. I'm ridiculous.

Yay, I thought so! I sure did love that Abraham Lincoln simulacrum! It was so cute and sentimental for a robot/andriod type thing.

My favorite PKD book is:
A Scanner Darkly (which apparently there will be a movie for, but it'll be done in a "waking life" fashion with keanu reeves! YUCK)

I'm going to see it, but I imagine I'll cry my way through it, as it'll be a massacre of one of my favorite books ever.

wow a movie? holy crap!

Scanner was the first PKD I read seriously. It was actually assigned reading in my Advanced English Comp class I took at a JC. After that, I read a ton of his books. My favorites are We Can Build You, Ubik, Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch and Divine Invasion. Confessions of a Crap Artist is really good but different.

I loved the Lincoln simulacrum! I loved the whole concept, in fact, of how he was so much more human and kind and intuitive than Pris, a human girl totally devoid of emotions.
