My great-grandfather is dying. Slowly, painfully, he is wasting away in a hospital in Terre Haute. I write this not for pity, but as a statement of fact. My mom went down to see him today. She'll be there until late tonight. He was scheduled to be released but probably will just end up staying in the hospital, because he's still too weak to go

My godmother passed away two years ago, and I watched her waste away. It's hard to watch someone you've seen be strong and dignified deteriorate into a state of childlike dependence.
