Writer's Block: Where the Cheese Goes

Well, Heck.  That's sort of an existential question.

it begs a deeper one.

Do we add cheese because the thing we add it to lacks something, or is it frosting on the cake, so to speak?  Does Cheese have it's own Raison d'etre, or is it merely doomed to live a life of "the crap you put on spaghetti to make the sauce taste bearable? "
