Happy New Year to you as well. As for bitter, it is a wasted sentiment, and entirely irrational.

I would have hoped that some acknowledgement of breakups at this time of year would make someone feel better from knowing that you were not alone (no pun intended) in the battle of breakups. I suppose your tastes towards others' fate may vary.

Great link -- thanks.

I put off getting divorced over Christmas because I didn't want to ruin the holidays for all involved (especially our extended families--we had no kids). Of course, I had a miserable time . . . Holidays are a great excuse for the timid (me) to wait it out.

I've also noticed among my friends a trend in breakups a week or two before present-giving occasions, especially Valentine's Day. Or, as one guy friend put it, if you meet a new girl just before Valentine's (or her birthday, or whatever), you're automatically not obligated to get her a big present, but if you do acknowledge the occasion nicely (dinner, flowers), you could get lucky.

You know, I was actually curious about Valentine's contributing to it as well. I figured it was because of an "out with the old, in with the new" sort of mentality, but that also makes quite a bit of sense.
