Don't know about the rest of you, but back home, November 11th is called Veterans Day. Or Remembrance Day or-- well there's a lot of names for it. Mostly it's to honour the servicemen and women that have dedicated themselves to defending their countries or homeworlds, either in war or peacetime

[ She takes a deep breath, then closes her eyes ]
Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice.
Let Your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication.
If You, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?
But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered.
I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in His word.
My soul waits for the Lord more than sentinels wait for the dawn.
More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord,
For with the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption;
And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.

[he's not quite sure what to make of the rest of that - Spartans were never a particularly religious bunch, what with being trained to be soldiers from the time they were kids and all, but-- it's nice. Cathartic, in a way.]
... Thanks for that. It's beautiful.

You're welcome. It's, um, Psalm 130, if there are Bibles here.
Um, are you in the military, then?

[But there's nothing disparaging in his words. He's pretty chill like that.]
Yeah. Almost a 2-10 man. Name's Thom, kid. You got a name?

[ And that's her way of saying that she's cool with it not being his thing, and that she's not going to start telling him he's going to hell ]
Oh, I'm Buffy Meissonier. Nice to meet you.

Good way of thinking about it.
Buffy. You new here? Don't think I've seen you around.

Yes! I just got here a couple days ago. This place is crazy, but also kind of cool? Because there are no zombies so I can actually go exploring without Shaun or Georgia, and there are holograms and I'm trying to hack my computer so I can reverse-engineer some of the programs and basically it's awesome here. Even if I miss home. And Shaun and Georgia are here, so it's okay.
[ She would have been dead if she hadn't been pulled here, so she's not really complaining. ]

[... yeah, no, actually, he buys it. This place takes all types.]
You need any help with the programs, just ask. I'm a pretty fair hand at this sort of thing.

[ And now she perks up quite a bit. ] You're a hacker? Or a programmer? I manage the servers for our news site, After the End Times.

[seriously.]
Naw, if you want the real technical stuff I'd send you to my CO. She's a genius, she could make a trans-planet comm out of some shrapnel and a couple pieces of bubblegum. But I've got a layman's knowledge, yeah.

[ Seems pretty easy to understand to her. But then, she grew up with it. ]
...I think I would love to meet her sometime. I'm our electronics person, so I manage the servers and the security and all our equipment? And I don't wanna brag, but I'm pretty much the best you can get.
[ ...yeah, that's pretty much true. She's hacked the CDC before. And when the CDC is one of the most powerful organizations in the country, that's not to be sneezed at ]

She's pretty awesome. Name's Kat, if you see her on the network. Goes by Noble Two, as well. She's my Elcee. -- Uh. Lieutenant Commander.
Sounds like you're off to a good start though, yeah?

Um, yeah, I guess! I'm here with... well, my friends are... it's kind of a long story. But I'm making friends and poking around the network, so it's not all bad. [ smile! ]

[ solemnly ] Oh, I didn't realise. I'll be careful, though. Promise.

Heh, that's good to hear. But if you get into trouble you can always contact me or a member of my squad, yeah? We're in the protection business hereabouts.
