1) Stop calling yourself dumb. There is nothing wrong, abnormal, or remotely dumb about going on hiatus because you don't have the muse to write. NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, HEAR ME?

2) That might be good, because I've been in a giant rut that makes the grand canyon look like a crack in cemenet.

Simile. It uses 'like'. If it was a metaphor, it would be 'I've been in a rut that makes the grand canyon just a crack in cement', or something similar.
