Periodical Cicadas.

Okay, so I was outside smoking, and there was this periodical cicada nymph that had apparently just come out of its burrow. Its wings were SUPER CUTE and not fully formed yet, still being held close to the body and he was having some issues getting his above ground legs ( Read more... )

Living out in the country, I got used to cicadas emerging every year. There's a few that hibernate a little shorter or longer than average. Their spawn usually emerge the correct number of years later - but its enough to perpetuate off-year cycles.
And if that doesn't make any sense, don't worry, its only 4:30 in the morning. ^_^

The 17 year brood X swarmed in 2004, we were hair south of the range and I was too late to see it when I took a drive to try and find them. I'm not sure what the local variety is, but we're not on any brood maps.

I did see us listed on a few lists though not precisely mapped but...NOT for 2k6.

If its greenish its a Dogday Cicada, which is the "annual" cicada which has a 3 or 5 year cycle. There is also a 13 year cicada here, but not enough of them to get us on a map.
