riots in civilised society

any one find these new events to be oddly alarming?

if the populace of supposedly civilised society acts this way in relatively good times what are they going to be like in the near future?

What is the reason for those riots? What do Australians have to riot about?

The Australian Riots have come to a head largely because of the whole OMG Terrorists bullshit thats constantly being spruiked by our neanderthal leaders. Our populace has always been pretty racist anyway. Its certainly disturbing that its gotten this bad though - I never would have thought that we'd have these sorts of riots here. I can more or less understand the aboriginal community getting violent about being mistreated by the police and paractically everyone else, as they did earlier in the year, but this whole 'Lam's Out' business is just repulsive beyond belief.

So how is New Zeland on the whole Terrorist thing. You country has always seemed like one of the sanest amongst the western world. It looks more and more appealing every time I see "Terror!" on the front page of the newspaper, on TV, on posters at the train station, on the train... makes me want to blow something up.

this is what i love about...i dunno, people. the fact we think we're somehow more "civilised" then others (usually others in more poorer nations), like we've somehow cut ourselves free from our ancestry. then little incidents like this happen and we're reminded that at the end of the day we're still the apes we were 828936 years ago and it's only artificial wealth (and the thought that we can all be a part of that wealth) that keeps us in check.
it reminds me of this link:
http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic14183.html
people read that and were like, "oh it wont happen here, we're more civilised." i didn't say anything at the time, as i couldn't be bothered, but i thought "we'll see. we'll see."

Yeah I agree. I dont think there is any doubt that wealth only maintains the illusion of stability. That reinforces a few key concepts, namely religion. When you no longer have the means for sustenance what do you turn to? It's why rich people don't need God...the money will carry them through. Then you can say, well, poor people created the concept of the meek inheriting the earth because they won't do it the first time around.
