What a fun, sooty day! I read a passage today from a French chef's writings in the 1800s and he talked about being cooped up in the kitchen with all the coal-fire cooking, and no windows that opened (because that would let in cool air which would cool down the food) and how everyone would eventually sicken and maybe even die from the coal but they didn't care because they loved the kitchen even as they hated it and where else could they go?
And I thought, "I can cook without literally killing myself. What great times we live in!"
And I support your multiple dairy purchases. All that Vitamin D and calcium!
As I stared across the black haze and smelled the distinctive smell I couldn't help but think of Victorian London and other such sooty eras. I know that we still burn tons of coal every minute, but it isn't belching out of my fireplace, and everyone else's on the street. Not to mention the 5 or 6 trains that pass daily just down the hill. No wonder people tended to wear dark clothing. :)
