My little home on the Internet is moving. Because Six Apart is not a fit landlord, but an evil corporation who are part of Bush's far-right Christian agenda (apologies to all the relatively liberal Christians on my friendlist) as illustrated by their decision that images of breastfeeding are somehow evil (but only as default pictures?!?) and (this ( Read more... )

six apart is useless, goodbye

On the flip side, it could be argued that thanks to Bush's far-right Christian agenda, more or less any website viewable by kids has to cover its ass to avoid lawsuits, and being threatened to be taken down. And... Well... The Internet has been overcommercial since 2000 at least, so opt-in ads isn't exactly anything suprising.

But your reasoning isn't non-sound.

LJ is fighting a losing battle against MySpace, and needs to compete, hence the new (fugly) userpage and more ads for non-paying members. It was going to happen, it's going to happen all over the net. If COPE becomes law it's just going to get worse for everyone. And I understand the breast picture thing too -- I believe it has to do with firewalls and censors. What if you check your LJ at your break at work? What if your work firewall censors pictures of OMGBOOBIES? Can't use the LJ, can you? JournalFen has a similar policy.

I'm frankly surprised that this hasn't happened sooner. And I think that your claim that this has to do with with Bush's Christian agenda is bullshit. One, it's a web company. Two, it's based in San Francisco. Three, the amount that the Bush administration cares about bloggers is nil.

I'm sorry you're moving to GJ, and I hope you find what you're looking for there

I'll not be following as, frankly, I believe the breastfeeding icon row is overblown. It's only about *default* icons, not about *all* icons (people can still use them in the appropriate places, just not where they'll show up on the user-search pages, which I sort-of agree with). I've been to greatestjournal in the past (even still have an id there), but I never use it, it's purely a backup place to go from the days when LJ was a little bit ropey on the connections front (pre-sixapart days).

And greatest journal is not ad-free. All users see ads on application and log-out pages. Ideals don't page the bills.

And that is something I've since noticed, and been close to returning to LJ over.

Or I may not have a personal blog at all, and instead simply provide a music journal at www.last.fm - which has relatively few adverts, consistently relevant, and are based in Europe where privacy legislation actually means something.

For now, I'll settle for GJ on the grounds that it's not Six Apart, but I'm hardly updating. I guess I'm probably going to stay in the very Web 1.0 world of forums.

I really, really miss you! Please, come back. Yes, I'm groveling. I want to hear about how the university is going.
