[Vampires. She'd once willingly walked into the seethe. Once, she'd unwillingly walked into the seethe, having no other choice. She dealt with Stephan on a daily basis when his van needed repairs, and had even bought him that ridiculous Scooby Doo.

But this was different. The music hurt her sensitive ears but she didn't care. She wanted to see this place for herself. So, she stepped into the club, even though it made her want to curl her lip and have four feet instead of two.

Gabriel would forgive her for cheating on Purgatory. She hoped.]

Yeah, well, he likes to think he's capable of epic feats of chivalry, but I've known him since we were twelve. He's not so much a gentleman as he is a putz. [winks]

[She laughs.]

I'd almost believe it. But, since Mouse loves him, I've got to give him a pass.

I still can't figure out how he ended up with a Temple Dog, but that's what I love about Harry. He's always surprising you.

That's the second time I've heard Mouse called that. Which Temple exactly?

I never got a chance to ask Harry which temple, but I can almost guarantee it's some place in Tibet. He didn't even realize that he had a real, live Foo Dog on his hands until the pup was half grown. He just thought the monks were sentimental, or really protective of their pedigreed pooches.

He did say something about Mouse possibly seeing part Fae. I wouldn't doubt it.

From what I've read, they're the offspring of Tibetan Mastiffs and the ancient guardian spirits that those Chinese lion-dog statues are modeled after. [She shrugs.] They could be part fae, but Mouse is a heck of a lot more loyal and self-sacrificing than most of the fae I've met.

Fae are loyal... in their own way. They do have rules they have to follow. It's figuring out what those rules are that's damned near impossible. Especially since there's always a loophole.

Oh, believe me. I know all about the loopholes. I lived with them for the first part of my adult life.

I've run into a few, more than few, since we don't live all that far from the Reserve. But they generally stick to themselves.

They haven't exactly come out of the closet, where I come from. [Elaine wrinkles her nose.] Everybody knows the stories, thanks to the G-Men--Gutenberg and the Brothers Grimm--but not everyone believes in them. Though that hasn't seemed to hurt them much. [she laughs] I guess they're like people, there's bad ones, and...less bad ones.

Try working for one who has opinions on the Brothers Grimm, and none of it polite. [Oh so dry. Zee had opinions.]

I'd never call them bad. Mmm. More...chaotic neutral.

Opinions? Don't they all? [Laughs. If you think the fae are neutral, then you've never met the Queens.

Neutral merely means that they don't care one way or another. They're mostly out for themselves. As long as they are taken care of, the rest doesn't matter.

[She finishes off her soda again.]

We don't have Queens, but Gray Lords. Their control is utterly absolute.

A wolf is neutral. The sidhe... [She shakes her head.] It's entirely possible I'm biased, but out for themselves is putting it mildly. And we still have good old Summer and Winter. [No, she isn't going to say their Names.]
