Helen had been scarce, lacking in her Greeter duties a little with the new 'batch' of Newcomers. Today she was out on the field, wondering quite who or when the next arrival would be. Apparently it seemed that it wouldn't be long before that question became answered, judging by the young woman that appeared (and rolled) onto the field.

Making her way over Helen took a quick moment to analyse the situation - disorientation, as usual from the pull of the Core, but seemingly no injuries. She was lucky - many that Helen had seen arrive had been worse than her.

It didn't take long to cross the field and soon Helen was by her, moving her umbrella to shelter the young girl from the rain. "Are you all right?" A relative question, but it would help her to know of any injuries or conditions that Helen couldn't detect by eye. Everyone took to the Port and hearing of it differently and she couldn't help but wonder how this would turn.

"Yeah, I'm fine." She looked up at Helen. "Where am I? What's going on?" She put the device back in her jacket, holding it close to her body. This woman seemed nice, but she didn't know what to think. Hopefully she'd have some information.

"You're in a city known as Siren's Port - Canada." Even though Canada had been where Helen had resided for the past several decades she hadn't even heard of it, so don't feel bad to not.

"I'm afraid that I can't quite answer what is going on, however, that's a little unknown to even those that have been here for several years." She gives the girl an apologetic smile.

"My name's Helen. Would you prefer to sit somewhere? What I do know can be a rather long explanation." And shocking.

"Canada?" Well, looks like she wasn't dead. Yet. She tried to keep herself calm, however, and going with not thinking too hard right now about everything. But... Canada? At least that wasn't too far from the US, and once she got to a phone or computer, she could tell her father where she was. He would have a plan. He always did.

"I'm Claire." She kept her voice even. "Sure, yeah. That sounds good." She almost asked Helen if she had a phone, then decided against it. She'd wait until she felt a little better to call her father. Out wasn't like she would get hurt until then.

"It's nice to meet you. Come on, there's a seat by the side." They usually tried to get the Newcomers out of the diamond although considering it was raining Helen didn't see the harm in staying for a little longer - it wasn't dark at least.

"Where are you from?" It was something to hopefully break the ice a little before giving Claire the story. She could tell she was American but her accent placing wasn't entirely accurate.

"You too." Claire followed her. It was then she realized where she was, in a baseball diamond. Definitely not one of the top places she expected to end up in a situation like this. Kidnapping, or whatever this was.

"California," she replied. It wasn't a complete lie, after all. "How did I end up here?"

"A nice place." From what she could remember of the one time she'd been there, as brief as that had been and as little as she'd seen.

"It may be a little unbelievable, although I can assure you that what I'm telling you is true." She'd heard all the reactions; disclaimers helped. "There's a device known as the Core. Little is known off it due to the lack of permissable research but what we've been told is that it is what brings us to Siren's Port."

"Most of the time." When people weren't trying to abduct her, they were trying to kill her family. Then again, that happened in Texas as well.

"A device?" She tried to get that information to sink in. "Like a machine that brings people to Canada?" She looked down at her hands. It was similar to Hiro's ability, but a human wasn't responsible for it. For some reason, a machine with powers was harder to process than a person. "Where is it?"

She might be considering breaking the damn thing to see if that would send her home.

"Precisely. Sadly that I do not know - the organisations here prefer to keep that information strictly regulated as to prevent research into it." And others like Claire wishing to destroy it.

"Unfortunately that isn't all that it does." And this was the kicker. "There are individuals here that possess abilities, either ones that they had prior to their arrival or ones that have been discovered after arriving here. Somehow, and there's no conclusive explanation for this, but it would seem that arriving here either gives or awakens an ability." Helen hoped that she was keeping up without becoming overwhelmed.

Overwhelmed isn't exactly the word to describe how she was feeling. At least not about the ability part. She wondered if it should have been; it would be for a normal teenage girl from California, right? That was what she was trying to be . She tried for a subtle look of shock on her face, though she was notorious for being a terrible liar (according to West).

"People get abilities here?" She paused. At least, in this case, she wouldn't be the only freak around. As terrible as that sounded. "Sounds like some sort of science fiction movie. And this whole being brought here thing...people are just chosen randomly? Or do they use us for something?"

"They do, yes." Helen have her a nod. She caught the expression on her face but made no comment; she was used to secrecy regarding abilities, given that her world required it.

"It would appear to be random, at least until any sentience of the Core can be determined." Artificial Intelligence? Perhaps not, but an entity inhabiting it? It could be. "Thr same could be said to the abilities received, also. After we're here our lives are our own. For your first month you're provided with a free accommodation, although after that you need to pay rent to remain in the apartment or rent elsewhere. There are schools and jobs available, although for those that already reside here - ones not classed as Newcomers, not all are quite as welcoming." It was better to give her it straight, right?

Claire definitely appreciated it. She paused, taking it all in. She'd be on her own- okay, she could handle that. She could definitely do that. "What about being able to contact people outside of this city?"

The idea of not being able to leave hadn't occurred to her. She didn't even want to consider it.

"There isn't a known way, unfortunately. Given that Siren's Port does not appear on a map, and that there are others here that are not from Earth it has been theorised that we aren't in our own universe." Truly frightening, when you thought of it.

regeneratesalot November 12 2011, 02:35:22 UTC
"A different universe?" Well...that changes everything, doesn't it? "I guess I can cross that off my bucket list." Making a joke out of it would make it hurt a little less, at least for now.

"What else should I know about this place?" She had a feeling she really didn't want to know, but it would be better in the long run to know as much about this city as possible.

Helen smiled at that; she could understand the girl's point. "The abilities that I mentioned? It isn't the only difference that exists here." And this was the harder part.

"There are two sirens that sound daily - one in the morning and one in the evening. The sirens are very important to remember - they mark the safety within the city." At least the safety from the Darkness. "With the evening siren comes the Darkness - something more than simply night. The Darkness brings with it dangers in the forms of creatures, ones that do not listen and cannot be reasoned with. If they have the opportunity they will kill you." Did she sound like she'd seen this before? She'd seen it both on the street and in the hospital ( ... )

Claire blinked, looking at Helen like she expected Ashton Kutcher to jump out and tell her she'd just been Punk'd. But she knew that wouldn't happen. The Darkness (which Claire quickly figured out wasn't just another name for the night) aspect of this place - of this world - made Claire wonder about the state of the city. She wasn't sure how to respond for a few seconds as she gathered her thoughts. The effects of arriving hadn't left her yet, either.

"What happens to the creatures after the morning sirens? Or are they just not as powerful when the Darkness isn't around?" Though Claire couldn't get hurt, she was definitely not a fighter.
