So, I've been reading here and there about people having these magic devices to take along (instead of a heavy laptop) to read fanfic, watch shows, listen to music etc
( Read more... )
Welll, I think, it depends, what you actually wants to do with all these nifty advices.
I, for one, got my sony reader to save all the fanfics and carry it with me all the time *g* I couldn't live without it anymore! And I have the classic I pod for watching my fave tv series, vids etc, when I'm on holiday or know, I have to kill time over the day, lol. And on both you can listen to music as well, although I hardly do that.
Lately the OH bought me a small notebook, because we spent so much time away from home and I was annoyed to take my heavy laptop with me. So I got me a web stick to go with it so I can surf in between. I'm not fond on reading on a comp, laptop whatever, but you can do everything on the nb,so maybe that would suit you better, than an e-reader/mp3 player ?
I know that some ppl on my f-list got the kindle and they are as well very fond of it. But I don't know about the extra features or differences to the sony one.
It almost sounds like a netbook would fit the bill best, since it can do all the things I'd like to use it for (watching shows, reading fanfiction, listen to music).
I think I need to get out and see some of these devices in person, because I can't imagine what it would feel like to watch a show on a tiny ipod.
Sorry, I'm very old fashioned. I use my mobile to phone, and I print the stories to read them... So I'm no help for you, but anyway I'm curious what the others say!
I have a kindle and love it, but one thing to be aware of it with it is that, while it's advertised as having wireless, it isn't good at accessing webpages, even text heavy ones, except the Amazon store itself. I think it would work well if you saved fics and the like as word or PDF documents and e-mailed them, but less well if you wanted to access them from the web archives directly.
Another thing to consider is a netbook; my brothes has one and loves it. It's not as light as a Kindle or iPhone, but is only a pound or so.
And thanks for the advice on a kindle! So, basically you have to save the reading material on another computer and then send via email? Is it a specific email adress just for the kindle, or can you check regular email on it?
They give you a username@kindle.com address that you can e-mail files to; that's the easiest way to load things on it. I think they do charge ten cents to convert certain kinds of files to kindle format though; I'm not sure on the details of it. You can avoid that by transferring from your computer to the Kindle directly with a USB cord.
I have an iPodTouch with 16GB on which I have both seasons of LoM, quite a few music vids and my complete Diary of Dreams CD collection + some wallpapers and themes. I love the little device as I have to drive bus a lot to get to work and it helps if one can either listen to music or watch vids. It has a nice large touch screen and is very easy to use. It is rather expensive though which is why I didn't go for the 32GB one. The earphones are rather shitty though and much to big that's why I replaced them by in-earphones instead which are much more comfortable

Incidentally, I checked out the free naturalreader version(voices are still a bit robotic), but there is one voice, named "Ray" that actually sounds really good in the one sentence they let you here as a sample. The good voices are not free, of course! :(
I like the idea of something that holds loads of stories, but personally I couldnt go along with it. I prefer to have my book/zine/whatever in print form and in my hands! So, not very useful to you, am I? LOL Sorry.
I know what you mean, but I've gotten very used to reading on the computer, and for travelling, it's definitely great to have access to a whole library of stories. Which reminds me: I left one of my favorite zines in Germany earlier this year and have to tell my mom to send it back over!

Too bad that it wouldn't work for reading!
If only there were pros stories available as mp3 files, read by someone!
*That* would work on an ipod, right?

That would work and it would be great too. Best read by MS or LC...
