Everyone is going to tell you Edinburgh, and they are probably right. But I personally adore Glasgow and the surrounding countryside more. And you can actually do both cities if you want, they are not that far apart at all.
Forget the cities altogether - go out to the west coast somewhere, with the sea and the islands to wake up to... *g* But then it'll depend where you're starting from for your two or three days time...
Everything I could tell you would be nearly 30 years ago... Oh dear! But I remember that I enjoyed the deserted parts with the single track roads a lot, although that's nothing for 3 days. Edinburgh IS very nice! I personally would probably avoid the tourist traps around Loch Ness. I'm very curious what the others may say! Sigh! It was one of my best holidays there in Scotland 1981...
- Edinburgh, especially the castle and the streets leading up to it that are full of nice touristy shops.
- Loch Ness (but avoid Fort Augustus at the bottom and drive up the west-hand side where you'll find quiet spots and the lovely ruined Urquart Castle.
- The Trossachs generally (the scenery roughly between Loch Lomond in the west and the city of Stirling in the east), where my personal highlights would be Callander and Balquidder and Stirling Castle.
- If you happen to be around south west Scotland, you mustn't miss Gretna Green (where English couples traditionally elope to), and Caerlaverock Castle is also lovely (and triangular).
In my experience though, there are very few parts of Sctoland that aren't worth visiting :)

The planning is half the fun!
Just another 6 weeks, and I'll be on a plane.
