Yesterday I drove 7 hours to North Dakota. On the border of Minnesota and North Dakota you could see a dark storm coming down the highway, bowed out towards me like a giant boomerang. Over lunch, I listened to Al Gore talk about the environmental crisis on the radio. God, I wish he were (recognized as) the president. I was standing in line at the Astor Cafe next to this little girl, about 6 or 7 years old. She said "you look pretty." I was all scraggly and sweaty from biking around. It was the best thing, ever.

I rode across this morning, squinting in the fog. You can kind of see the rubble of I-35W on either side of the river, green steel (I think) jutting out into the air, and little recovery boats tooling around. Ghostly and oddly commonplace at the same time--my little brain has already acclimated to the death and destruction. Has yours ( Read more... )

I keep seeing police cruisers from Plymouth, Richfield, and other suburbs driving around or blocking off roadways--that's multijurisdictional policing (memorandums of understanding, I think?) at work, which I've never seen before in person.
