Things that make you go "hmmm"

A small touch of irony in the health insurance discussion. So, a Texan Republican says "The massive health care plans being crafted behind closed doors in Washington will ultimately allow the government to decide what doctors we can see, what treatments the government thinks you deserve and what medicines you can receive ( Read more... )

I heard an interesting thing on NPR talking about state legislature regarding health care in Maryland. They have a commission which sets prices for procedures and drugs. No matter which doctor you go to, you can only be charged the same price for the same service. In the meantime, health insurers can only compete for business by changing what they can control- their premiums, business practices and customer service- and doctors are in the same boat- quality of care. I'm starting to think that would be the best way to go nationally.

Regardless of what people think should be done, I am annoyed at the people who think nothing needs to be done. They can totally take one of my biweekly hour long calls to United customer service on the twins' behalf and see what they think about the system then.

They think nothing needs to be done because A: They're getting massive kickbacks from the health insurance industry. B: They have so much money that it doesn't matter if they spend $500 on a single therapist's visit. C: Are so incredibly stupid and self-centered that they'll say no to anything a Democrat suggests just because it's a Democrat. D: All of the above. For fuck's sake, even the DOCTORS say the system needs to be overhauled!

Oh, I get why. I'm just still annoyed with them anyways. None of those are good enough reasons.

The difference is, the insurance companies work for the stock holders, the government works for me.

And as publicly traded companies, many things must be revealed in annual reports.

I can choose businesses, I have care through my work and my husband's but nothing prevents me from shopping other places. The government will mandate.

The government programs (Medicaid, Medicare) already mandate how much a physician will get paid and the treatments.

The key issue that we are talking about is congress is trying to pass something that will majorly change things and open debate and reporting is not being allowed.

I do not love insurance companies, but I understand their motives, make money.

truly not happy now for a procedure done the summer the insurance company changed it mind and is not paying for all of what they said they were. I do not have the whole story because we haven't talked to them to ask.
