The strange journey of Patrick J. Newfingle began with broken tailpipe

Jun 20, 2008 10:47

I ordered a computer part from NewEgg.com.  They are based in Southern California, in Whittier, so imagine my surprise when I ordered the part thingie and I'm told it'll be all of three days shipping, and get here Monday.

No big deal.  So I check the UPS tracking information:
EDISON, NJ, US
That's the starting point. Okay, it was drop shipped from ( Read more... )

Perhaps you do not know how UPS Ground works.

The package goes out in the next truck to leave the station. Doesn't matter where it's going. It doesn't go in the back, but in the front seat with the driver.

Whenever he passes another truck-if he remembers the package-he will compare his destination with the other driver's. If the other driver is going somewhere closer to the packages' final destination than he is, he hands the package off.

It is in this way that every UPS Ground package travels the country, slowly meandering its way closer and closer to its destination, assuming each driver has a decent grasp of geography.

Good luck.

Now I know who it was who bought the rights to my entomologist geek friend's paper on communication among ants.

(Kidding, I think the sold it to a company that does arcane network traffic and load balancing monitoring.)

That's an awesome method. "Hey, are you going to Philly, or LA?" "Yeah, what have you got?" "Couple packages. That one's going to New York." "It's okay, I know Sven is going to New York, I'll see him down by Arby's."

3 days from the east coast is not UPS ground
more like ups 3 day service( I know your kidding John)
ground would be 5 to 7 days
SECAUCUS, NJ, US is probably a UPS hub
it took a 3 days for a 2 person team to drive a 53' trailer from Heroes World Dist in NJ
to SoCal with a stop in Alberquque New Mexico to get Mile High comics in Denver their stuff by Wedsday
me that yr I needed to leave faire by 5pm on sunday to get to the warehouse to unload the truck so it could be in Frisco by 9 am monday
granted this was back in 96

also they may be based in SoCal but you don't want it shipped from SoCal because then they would have to charge you sales tax in Ca
this is why I love when Hero games has a warehouse in Nevada including downloads

Secaucus is a UPS hub. All items that are shipping out go to a "local" hub and then will travel from hub to hub based on shipping routes of UPS. If your shipment was a three day delivery, then it's not going UPS ground. UPS ground from coast to coast is about a seven day, or five business day, trip. So chances are it's loaded on a plane and flown out here.

Used to work with a company as their shipping manager. Talked to the guys who came out and got the skinny on what actually happens.

Okay. It's 3 day delivery, not UPS Ground.

But it makes much better sense, now. Secaucus is local hub, Philly is their regional air hub.
