i think snape was using legilimency (reading minds) with dumbledore. the potion had already poisoned dumbledore, so he would die anyways and snape needed to make voldomort believe that he was on his side (i.e. by killing dumbledore) and he already made the unbreakable vow to protect draco. so maybe snape isn't as bad as he seems, which is probably why he was so upset when harry called him a coward (snape had just killed the one man who had the utmost trust in him, and always beleived in him, against his own will, at dumbledore's begging).
