I looked around for cheap grad schools, found one, applied and got in (that'd be Texas). I didn't apply to other schools like Illinois, VaTech, etc because they looked too expensive. Then I found out all these schools offer huge assistantships and fellowships, so the cost is irrelevant. I don't know if that's how they roll in philosophy depts, but I'd say don't apply to a school just because it's cheapest

you're definitely right... the only minor difference with philosophy programs, though, is that they usually have the least available money for assistantship (since they're often the smallest programs at the school). they're also highly competitive, because philosophy majors are the only group that--on the whole--performs consistently higher than average on the GRE, LSAT, and GMAT.

i guess the bottom line is that i'm too concerned i won't get an assistantship when i apply in the fall, and that i'll have to go to a cheap school instead.

the only problem is: if that does happen, i'll have to go to school in california, and for that to happen i'll have to establish residency for one year prior to enrollment.

so it's either wait a year and hope i get an assistantship, or play it safe and move to california now (because if i don't get an assistantship, i'll have no choice but to go there, but will have had to have been there for a year already)

make sense?
