because it's called an "lj cut" when you hide a lengthy post or a bunch of pictures underneath in a hiding place. that way when people look at their friends page it doesn't take three hours to load because bookie put seven jumping pictures where it looks like everybody in them is taking majestic air-dumps on his post.
