I refreshed the page all night, waiting for it to start to lean one way or the other, and when it start to lean toward passing, I walked away disgusted. This is exactly how I felt when we passed a similar language in Mi.
*sigh* I know that if it had failed, the crazy fucks would just do the same thing they did in Arizona, and the same thing they've been doing here with the parental notification/waiting period for abortions in teenagers, and just keep throwing it on the ballot until it gets passed. What's going to happen is it's going to get challenged to the federal courts, eventually it's going to make its way to the Supreme Court, and the SCOTUS is going to have to make a call on *all* such amendments, plus the Defense of Marriage Act.
Until it gets to that point, the religious right won't stop putting these things on the ballot, they won't stop making horrible smear campaigns (which, by the way, is just an awesome way to bring people to the church: lie and cheat to get their way), they won't stop sowing fear and hate. And even then, they're going to nibble at the edges and try to oppress people, all while whining about the "homosexual agenda
( ... )
Yup. I also saw that Washington approved assisted suicide, and Colorado voted down a measure that would define human life as starting at the moment of conception, which amuses and confuses me what with the whole Focus on the Family and megachurches and shit in Colorado.
I too am very disappointed in this outcome, though not really surprised. It is going to be a long painful road but these steps will actually just accelerate this to the Federal courts and the Supreme court. Ultimately, I think this will backfire in the faces of those that supported it. They have opened the doors for a CA case to make it to the supreme court where a friendly ruling would apply to all states! And with Obama in office, and some justices getting ready for retirement, timing will be everything to ensure a favorable outcome.
*nod* Already, opponents of 8 are suing to block 8 from going through. If that fails, it'll take the federal courts to overturn it, and I know that the fight will go that far.
A sad day. 52% of Californians found it necessary to take away a right from thousands of people that meant them no harm. A right that if these people exercised would in no way affect the 52%...Prop 8 was a legal way to pass judgment on others and the way they choose to live their life...I really hoped that California, perhaps the most liberal and open-minded state in the union would be wiser and more just than that....I am disappointed...

actual language here.
Ultimately, I'm completely stunned. and have nearly no words. What part of love requires definition?
