The ecology of the Living Room and Office Tanks

So, having all these fish settling for a day or so, with stable chemistry, has me pleased. Unfortunately I lost one of the zebras, the biggest actually, this morning, but it wasn't chemical or biological-he looked injured, which means he hurt himself on the tank or got into a scuffle with the gouramis as he was the next largest fish. I've never been able to keep plural fish. Closest I ever came was having a battle-scarred, finless, one-eyed angelfish that was borderline immortal.

I fed it on neon tetras.

If I ever get aquatic pets again, I'm just going to get a mantis shrimp and call it a day.

The gouramis wailed on their tankmates. I lost two or three Dainos in ONE day-I'm frigging missing a fish. I moved them this morning to the 10 gallon and put the 10 gallon fish into the big tank. We get home this evening and they killed one of the shrimp. I moved Pierre and Juan Julio to the 20 gallon and just hope the absurdly trace amounts of copper in the frog food won't bother them. I'm going to keep the gouramis alone until I can get a surly pleco they'll be afraid to bother. And restock the daino school, they look so lonely with only three of them.

On the flip side, the cherry barbs and the neons are getting along great, they're forming this giant uberschool in the middle of the tank.

I'm surprised about the battle-scarred angel, normally they're sort of pissy and die real easily.

Speaking of shrimp-the new thing are these micro tanks, they're like 2 or 3 gallons. They're normally designed for a betta and a little plant, but people are turning them into micro community tanks, with shrimp and various tiny fish. I'd totally do one that was planted with shrimp and frogs.
