In some ways, I think FB does allow for that brief checking in with someone from your past. Seems like the friend request gets sent, there a short exchange of messages catching up on the last decade (or two), and then it fades to silence again. Or maybe that's just what it looks like on my end since I don't log into FB regularly enough and I can't figure out how to get my news feed to keep going back in time.
I'm terrible about actually using facebook to catch up with people outside stalking their photos for bikini pictures and commenting on the odd update. I actually messaged an ex whom I haven't spoken to in 15 years the other day and have been friends with on facebook for over a year to see how she had been doing. I know all about her kids I've never met now, but nothing about her.
