LJ Idol, Week Five: Build a Better Mousetrap

Apr 14, 2014 19:47

Short story for LJ Idol this week. I don't even know when I last wrote original fiction. Jumping back in with both feet, because there's no other way to do it, I guess.

Topic: "Build a Better Mousetrap"
Trigger warning: [select black bar to view] mental illness (bipolar disorder)

Oh, poor kid. And her poor mother -- such a tough situation.

Yeah, it's no fun for anyone involved. (In an original version Ashley had more of a role too, but I cut it down drastically.) Thank you for commenting!

Well done. The characters are well developed. Eerily so at the length.

"You love your daddy for who he is. You don't want me to go back on those bad pills, do you, sweetheart?”

I'm bipolar, and I recognized what was happening almost instantly. This was .really heartbreaking and totally realistic

Thank you so much. I'm bipolar as well (though, thankfully, medicated and not prone to dropping hundreds of dollars on new mousetrap designs :P) and telling it from the perspective of the family member is obviously a bit of a different angle for me, so I'm so glad you found it realistic.

Thanks so much! (I've considered writing a followup to the story if there's ever an Idol topic that seems to suit, so maybe things will end more kindly for Chelsea and the rest of them there...)

“Because they're bad for me. They make me slow. They make me stupid. I can’t think when I’m on them, it’s like someone shoved cotton balls in my brain.”

That part hit me pretty hard I felt that way when I was on anti depressants. very good piece.

Yeah, it's pretty awful, the tradeoffs you're often forced to make when it comes to psych meds. It's so complicated and frustrating. However, I'm glad you liked the piece. :)
