quick question..how old does a kitten have to be to be fixed? And also, when to their eyes change from blue to green/yellow? I know that siamese cats eyes stay blue, but what about the rest? An adorable male kitten showed up on my doorstep this morning but I'm not sure how old he is. he isn't too big, and surprisingly, he gets along really well with Hemi.
At four weeks, mine are just starting to change...it'll take a few weeks for it to be a strong colour, but you can already see that the Siam-X kittens are much bluer than the tabby. As a rule of thumb, a reasonably healthy kitten should weigh about a pound for every month of age. It's not totally accurate, but a good guessing tool.
Before you get him around Hemi too much, you should probably have him in to a vet to give you a more accurate guess, and have him FeLV/FIV tested and get him his first shots and deworming/flea treatment (Advantage, Revolution, or Frontline, never Hartz/BioSpot). If he's positive for FeLV or FIV, he'll still make a good pet, but must be kept indoors and away from other cats that he might infect. Also, he will be more susceptible to infection as the disease attacks his immune system and will have a shorter life-expectancy. They can still live 10 or 12 years though. :-)
Most vets neuter at 4-6 months of age...when they are a good size but before they hit puberty1.
