I suspect most people using the codes don't have the entire thing memorized, but rather have a few specific colors they look out for.

Further evidence that I would never make it as a gay man. I'd goof this up and end up wearing the run a train on me hanky thinking it was the into nice romantic dinner and getting to know you first hanky. And with how close some of those are, I think you have to be a gay male to know all those colors (not to mention ID them at a distance in a low lit bar).
