Braeburn apples, 89c/kg. Buttercup pumpkins, 99c each. And it's feijoa season! Autumn's the best time of year. I bought nearly 8kg of apples. I had apple crumble last night and have just taken some apple muffins out of the oven ( Read more... )

I love bulk stores... wish there was one I could get to easily by public transit. The big Canadian chain is called Bulk Barn.

I think even if they do inspect things before they're shipped, they won't always see. Bug eggs aren't necessarily noticeable, but by the time the stuff gets to where it's going, things will have hatched.

I keep calling ours Bulk Barn! That was the local one in the last place I lived, and I get them confused so badly I've taken to saying Bin Barn. Quite likely the same chain. My Bin Inn is a 20-minute walk away, and the two women there know me -- they're always grumbling about refilling the sunflower seed bin after I've been!

Good point about the eggs. A lot of things are heat-treated these days to kill them, which means that the brown lentils I bought couldn't be used to make lentil sprouts; they just went slimy and wouldn't germinate. I had to buy organic lentils to make sprouts out of, and I'm thinking buying organic ones all the time is a good idea.

I think you need to plant some beans for yourself in your garden and see what happens. Are beans even planted like that? I'm not sure at all. I don't have much of a green thumb, but I'm sure you could try and that would be fun.

Also I agree with indefatigable42 in the sense that the bugs probably hatch on the trip and one can not inspect every nook and cranny for minuscule bug eggs.

I plan to grow beans at some stage, when the time of year is right. My garden's going to expand!

One time, back when beans were available, I had soaked a pot of black-eyed beans ready to cook, and when I drained the soaking water into my herb garden one bean fell out. The plant that grew from it produced several pods of creamy-coloured beans with brown marbled patterns, no black spot. The black-eyed beans must have been hybrids.
