teaching

I guess I feel really out of touch with myself. Not that when I blogged all the time I was more sane-- way not--- but I don't really know how to deal with my new life yet. How do I just go about being what I've always wanted to be? Maybe it's so hard because I never knew THIS is what I wanted to be. I thought I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher, ( Read more... )

1. You are an awesome sister-in-law and I love you. = ]
2. I think you know that I am 100% against home schooling and still have not reconciled with the fact that you, as a qualified teacher, think it is a good idea on any level.
3. I am pretty sure that, as their teacher, it really is your job to teach them. I will not get started on the God part as I know we have very different views on that subject. ;-)
4. Saying that you will be able to see if you have done a good job or not at teaching the kids makes this sound like they are some type of interesting experiment. It's not an experiment! I know you don't really feel that way but dude, it's not like you can reset and start over.
5. I know we have discussed this before but I am surprised at your disinterest in teaching spelling. How do you expect the children to effectively write - and to a lesser extent read - without being taught to spell? As far as I can see, this will put them at a huge disadvantage.

The end.

1. thanks:) I heart you lots too:)
2. my kids will DEFINITELY have enough experiences with public school to at least be able to decide for themselves if they want to be home schooled. Also, they are all going to be girl scouts and get much of the social development they would be missing from school-- besides the, you know, boys.
3. I know it's my job... but a big part of my job is humility too.
4. I'm not seeing them as an experiment, more as a very different job than teaching one grade at public school. I'm still trying to wrap my mind and teaching style around it.
5. The recent studies about spelling have shown that it is more effective to have kids read for an hour than study spelling for an hour. If they see the proper spelling of words enough they learn them. Also, everyone does most of their writing on the computer (and hopefully firefox) and spell check has made proper spelling obsolete.

i always wanted to be a teacher too... but the whole classroom thing i dont think would have worked for me either.
also that is awesome that you can focus on a few children and that you enjoy it. the impact will most likely be huge.
i know for myself, when i love what i am doing i do better at it.
