I'm posting this from b's incredible new iPhone. I swear,I didn't think I wanted one until I touched one...and now...

Just passed my orals, I'm offically all but done!

Now I'm no longer thinking about poetry, but rather, thinking of what sort of biarrely huge and way-too-sweet dessert I'm going to get myself to celebrate with on my way home...

So I just finished giving my practice job talk to the department here - it's a new thing that they're doing this year to prep people for giving actual job talks if they get on-campus interviews when they're on the market, as I am right about now. It seems that I have officially passed my writtens - I have some of the comments now which strike me as really useful and nice, and I'll pick up the rest of the comments next week when I get back from Madison. Now I just need to schedule an oral exam with my director (and they don't let you schedule an oral exam unless you're going to pass it, so ( Read more... )

I'm done.

I think I should have responses back from my committee within the next week or so, and if my answers go over OK, I'll probably defend right after Thanksgiving. And then the worst part of this whole PhD thing is over with!

I'm going to eat something and maybe take a nap to celebrate.

So far so good - the first day of comps went splendidly, actually. I sat down, wrote out my outlines, and then spent the next five hours writing 23 one-and-a-half spaced pages. Which is excellent, considering that I was shooting for 18. I'm going to teach my morning classes at the smaller college tomorrow and then head back here to study for day ( Read more... )
