Photo Dump: Winter in L.A.

Some photos from our Sunday at Faria Beach, as well as a few from the Christmas Break.

Brady looking at a starfish clinging to a rock. The tide pool was full of starfish and teeny little crabs, but Christine also found a sea urchin and a sand dollar.

Fantastic pics, Slee. My favorite is the first one. The expression Brady wears while he looks at the fat starfish is like a mixture of trepidation, concern and curiosity. Is Christine wearing the cardigan you gave her for Christmas? It looks great on her.

Coachella's Saturday lineup is amazing.

Thanks, A. The first picture was my favorite as well for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Christine is, in fact, wearing the Free People cardigan in the Disneyland picture. Good eye! I think she liked that the best of all the things I picked out for Christmas, and she looks really cute in it.

Coachella pales in comparison with SXSW. Do you ever get a chance to make it to any of the shows? Some day...

This year's SXSW lineup does look pretty good. I've never been to the fest as the pass is too expensive ($525). And the orgnaisers will only let non-passholders into a show after it has been filled up with pass holders. I've thought of volunteering with SXSW before, maybe someday I'll get off my lazy ass and do it.

"I really like the composition of this picture"

The photojournalism teacher in me would give you high marks for excellent use of the rule-of-thirds. Brady is in the left third of the frame, and the horizon is hinting towards the top third. He also is framed by the line of clouds along the top edge of the photo and the words on the sand lead the eye right towards him. There's some pretty harsh backlighting, but that's to be expected when you live in California and you're pointing your camera at the ocean in the afternoon. Brady-and-starfish is also very well composed. I also like the Disneyland picture. Catherine's face shows genuine emotion. Speaking from experience, it's tough to get a good shot when you are actually riding one of those attractions. We're going down to Florida in a couple of weeks, so I'll try to do the same thing when we ride Dumbo. Catherine and the Christmas tree is also well-done. You obviously didn't use a flash, yet you still got excellent clarity and focus.

Great pictures.

Thanks for the critique! I learned the "rule of thirds" in my high school photography class, but it's rare when I actually follow it. Doing so, however, really makes the picture a lot more memorable.

Have a great time in Florida!
