Photo Dump: Winter in L.A.

Jan 31, 2006 20:12

Some photos from our Sunday at Faria Beach, as well as a few from the Christmas Break.

Brady looking at a starfish clinging to a rock. The tide pool was full of starfish and teeny little crabs, but Christine also found a sea urchin and a sand dollar.

Gracias! I figure I only have about 6 years before Catherine becomes a sullen teenager, so I'm doing my best to take advantage of these golden years.

The phrase "photo dump" makes me laugh. I am five years old.

Can Brady surf yet?

Brady is afraid of sharks, so won't even stick his toe in the water. It's a shame because he has great balance, and I can really see him being a good surfer. Plus he has good surfer hair, which is always a bonus.

One of the guys in my safety training class yesterday giggled like a school girl at the mention of the term "retention dike". I still can't keep a straight face at the mention of Lake Titicaca.

I've been doing a lot of research into the subject, and you're absolutely right about the North being a lot worse than SoCal for sharks, mostly because of the seal/sea lion population. Ventura county has only had one fatality in the last 20 years or so when a Great White killed a kayaker, but they're definitely out there. (The estimate is 6-12 Great Whites are born each year off the VC coast.)

The Rincon Point encounter documented at the Pacific Coast Shark News, occurred very close to where we bought Catherine's wet suit, although in an area where only hardcore surfers dare tread. Still...spooky!

I feel like we should have some sort of "safe word" in case the cuteness is too much to bear!

Thank you, darling.

Thank you for thinking so, dear. They're often little imps, but at least they look cute while carrying out their evil deeds!

How beautiful are those photos? The starfish looks like it is trying to hide on the other side of the rock from Brady. Little wetsuits are so cute! I saw a kids surf school here the other day, and one little girl was smaller than Gilly, so her big sister had to help her carry her board.

Thanks, Mif! I wish they'd get over their fears and actually dare the ocean, but it's still new to them. I've always been a little sad that my parents didn't have the opportunity to expose me to skiing or surfing when I was that age. I feel too old to go endure the learning curve at this stage, but hopefully the Weestaks will have no such regrets.

The Miflets are still wary of the surf, and they've lived near it all their lives. They'll either go in with us, or just frolic in the shallows. And I can neither ski nor surf, despite having spent the best part of 34 years on the coast. I can however cling to a boogie board for grim death if the waves aren't too big. I reckon the Weestaks will be up and surfing in no time.
