2006 - Slee's Favorite Albums

Dec 14, 2006 10:44

I'll take a momentary break from my emo-tastic whining to present my list of favorite albums o' 2006. Although there are still several critical faves that I haven't had time to adequately absorb (Joanna Newsom, +/-, Califone, Robyn Hitchcock, Pernice Brothers...), I wanted to get get something on the record to prove that I'm not just Pitchfork's ( Read more... )

Impressive list! I've really been into The Knife lately. And Cat Power's The Greatest is definitely in my top 10 as well. I remember hearing somewhere recently that Matador's going to give it another push, because it had such potential to have crossover appeal and really push Chan Marshall into the mainstream. Matador pretty much realized they dropped the ball on that album and I think are going to give it another go. It'll be interesting to see how things turn out overall.

Matador's re-release of the CP album thankfully got rid of the ugly-ass pink cover and replaced it with a lovely pic of Chan. Unfortunately, it also contains cheesy "Specially priced CD...Plz buy it!!11!" text. Chan got so much publicity this year for non-album things - the Lagerfeld relationship, sobriety, wacky interviews, claiming to want to try out for SNL - that you think more people would want to check out the album, but alas!

I am so not ready for the end of the year. I can't make a list. There are still things I need to pick up!

I seem to feel like this every year, but especially this year.

I can't honestly say that I've given all my 2006 releases a fair shake, so my list was definitely more pre-emptive than anything. Of course all the British rags published their list at the end of November, which is just plain goofy.

I look forward to your list!

I have been listening to Fox Confessor lately because my discman is juuuuuusssst about falling apart and I'm afraid to take it out because the top might come off! But it's been a bit of a revelation. When I bought it, I politely listened to it a couple times before politely sliding it back into the sleeve.

But now. Whoa. How did I not hear how awesome this was before? Particularly the first "side", but I also love John Saw That Number and Maybe Sparrow. And Dirty Knife. AND THE WHOLE THING! Um. Basically, what I am trying to say is: NEKO RULZ!!!!1

You didn't like the new Built to Spill? It's definitely in my top 25. As is Grizzly Bear's Yellow House.

Neko's album was a classic grower for me. I definitely admired it before I finally began loving it - largely on the strength of the songs you mention above. Plus, she's so purty.

I was pretty meh on the BTS album (although it was much, much better than Ancient Melodies..., which blew.) Yellow House is still at the "admire" stage (except the awesome "Knife"), and probably suffers in comparison to seeing them perform live, which was an awesome musical experience.

Oh, there'll be downloadables, dearest. Just you wait...

I have three mixes that I'm going to post, but unfortunately I'm waiting to have a non-stolen internet connection before I upload them. Look for them starting Tuesday!
