Red had been eating. That wasn't knew, and, anyway, Cinderella had made sure that Baker made extra cookies because Red would steal one or two every day.

He had to hurry. Maybe if he hurried he could bandage the cut himself and no one would know how silly he'd been. When fixing fences and handling sharp tools is not the time to day dream about long red hair and pink lips and brown eyes...

Like the ones looking back at him from the door.

"... H- hi, Red," he said, grimacing. He clutched his side and still hoped she hadn't noticed the blood starting to soak through his jacket.

"I... I don't know, I just ran," he said, still pressing his palm to his side. "I tripped and there was the knife..." He looked up at her with wide eyes, worried. He didn't want her to think badly of him. He was supposed to be showing her that he was a man!

Red turned around slowly and looked at him, her hand in his. He always took her hand, didn't he?

"What about me?"

He squeezed her hand, breathing in. "How... How pretty you are. I was thinking about your red hair and the way you look at me with your big brown eyes... Your pink lips." He swallowed, looking at her lips now.

Red bit her lip, her cheeks turning completely fuchsia.

"I'm not a good reason to get a cut from a knife, Jack."

"You're a perfectly good reason to be distracted, though," he mumbled. He hardly noticed anymore that the only thing covering his chest was the linen bandage.
