"The mother had a disease that needed to be treated. But instead of treating the disease, St. Joseph's medical staff and ethics committee decided that the healthy, 11-week-old baby should be directly killed."

I actually had to stop for a second and remember that they don't know the difference between "baby" and "fetus."

This whole "indirect" vs "direct" thing is the stupidest goddamn thing. Oh, so it's totes cool to kill people as long as you *wink, wink, nudge, nudge* don't mean it.

Yes, Catholic bishops, tell me more about how you're so morally superior here.

The hospital's ethics team concluded that the pregnancy could be ended under the church's ethical directives because "the goal was not to end the pregnancy but save the mother's life," the hospital said.

Uh, who gives a fuck? If she wanted a Catholic priest to heal her, she wouldn't have shown up AT A FUCKING HOSPITAL. "Hmm, this woman is almost 100% going to die if we don't abort her pregnancy." "Oh, wow, that sounds serious, let's run it by the ethics committee, make sure it's in line with theology."

make sure it's in line with theology

OUR theology, we mean, not the patient's, of course. who cares about what she believes.

I'm sure she HAS some because these uppity women nowadays don't know their place. They need a strong celibate male bishop to whip them into line.

St. Joseph's doesn't receive direct funding from the church, but in addition to losing its Catholic endorsement, the 697-bed hospital will no longer be able to celebrate Mass and must remove the Blessed Sacrament from its chapel.

Oh noes! :P

So let's get this straight. They don't receive any money from the Church, but they are normally allowed to advertise the Church on a regular basis...

... And all they had to do for this to continue was take a pregnant woman's life? My goodness, that must have been a difficult decision. *facepalm*

Losing my Catholic status was one of the best things that ever happened to me.
