A month and a half of class

So, you remember when I mentioned how LJ installed some third-party code to rummage through all the links you include in your posts, and stick affiliate links on them to earn cash? But the coders were horribly amateur and didn't know how to filter URLs, so they broke a bunch of links, overwrote people's own affiliate IDs, and generally made a dog's ( Read more... )

This has me leaning more and more to exploring Dreamwidth and crossposting, esp if I can read my f-list over there...

I have to re-read the relevant posts, it might just be a Paid User feature, but it definitely exists as an option. You can also crosspost with settings retained (at least f-locked vs not), IIRC, and either allow comments at both sites, or disallow them at LJ.

If you set up filters and name them the same thing, and have the same icon keywords, those are also crosspostable.

Honestly, this shadiness doesn't bother me quite as much as some of their ad choices. Admittedly, I have firefox and adblock for that, even if I weren't a paid account... but it's really just yet-another-thing-about-LJ.

So, go ye forth and test the followers*, see if they are ready for the Promised Land!

* - that is, people following your blog...

Yeah, never been impressed with the ads. Decreasingly impressed all around the internet, which is why, after years of holding out, I finally installed an adblocker and a flashblocker. I don't really begrudge people ad revenue, but the ads have become increasingly annoying and obtrusive, and increasingly they're vectors to infect your damn computer.

I remember when the Best Buy ad autoplayed sound. It was great, because I'd leave an LJ tab open when I closed firefox, not be logged in when I restarted, and so my PC would start playing carols as soon as I loaded firefox. Lovely.

Yay for polls!

Not enough of my LJ friends are geeky enough to make the shift with you. I'd end up having to maintain two blog accounts. So if you do make the shift, but cross post here, I'll keep following you.

There will definitely be crossposting if I move as I've always been fairly sure I'll still have people/communities here. But when rahaeli and crew come through on reading FLocked posts... and if they can add in being able to set regular comment importation... seriously, I don't know that I could resist.
