Evenin'.

Well, nicely done, Ennis finding another hole in his self being filled up. He and Nick are healing each other. I have a friend who was in Nam, won't talk about it, says it's a closed and locked door. Think he should take Ennis' advice like Nick, and talk about it. Maybe someday.

Liked how Ennis put Jack's letter over his heart while talking to his sister. He knows where his heart is, and who holds his heart. He's no longer comfortable numb, he's slowly comfortably feeling.

Thanks again.

I just love your comments. They always seem to get to heart of the matter. Thanks for "getting it". Even though Ennis seems to be going through a lot of this self-discovery on his own, Jack is at heart of it. Thanks for reading and for kicking me in the butt every once in a while! ;) xx Em

Thank you for the beautiful poem and for this chapter. I'm so happy Ennis is getting along with Nick and Janie so well. She is feisty but she has a heart as big as outdoors. The Viet Nam Vets are the saddest of all soldiers returning home only to be spit upon for doing what they where obligated to do. I'm glad Ennis is finding his own Viet Nam, realizing nothing is more important then to be with the one you love, I adore how you describe the feelings of the man hurt on the inside as well as the outside but fighting to cover up the harsh reality with some raw joking. Ennis saw the look in Nicks eyes and he new that look, he had put that same pain stricken look into Jacks eyes and by telling Nick not to quit he also told himself he belonged with Jack. I hope they get together soon.
Thank you Em. It was lovely surprise.
Hugs

Thanks Torry, for drawing that parallel between Ennis and Viet Nam. I've tried to convey how Ennis has his own battles to wage, and somehow he's seeing a parallel between himself and these soldiers who were thrown out into the world too young. You're right, Ennis sees both himself and Jack in Nick, and Ennis is finding a way to respond to both. Jack and Ennis togetherness soon, I promise! xx Em

Oh I do love comments like yours! Thanks so much for taking the time to dialogue with me. Very often these types of comments help me with my characterization.

I had to lol at your comment about being tired of wimpy, paranoid, chicken-shit man. Unfortunately, canon gave us that aspect of Ennis, so we can't really write it off in a canon/au. However, I'm all about the process, so I need to see Ennis kind of go through things in stages. My Ennis probably is moving a lot more slowly than others would like but I'm very proud of him when he gets there!

As for Janie, you know, I swear she's pre-menopausal!! lol. She can be a real shit, but she reminds me very much of a mother cub protecting her own, whether it's her brother or her ranch. We have to remember she's a very young widow, so her grumpiness is somewhat understandable.

Funny you should mention Sleazeball Randall. I guess time will tell what shenanigans he'll get into! Thanks again, so very much, for reading. xx Em
