Months have passed. Except for that one time at the supermarket, he hadn’t seen Jaejoong again. He hoped that he had finally forgotten about him and had begun to be happy once again-without him.
Over the months, he had learned to live with the ever-present pain. Now, he could live normally, breath normally, but he still couldn’t do one thing-love normally. It was like a hole that had appeared when Jaejoong left him, a black hole that had sucked his ability to love another person away. Oh, it wasn’t as if he hadn’t tried. He had gone out with women his friends had introduced to him; he had even been in a relationship with one of those women. But it hadn’t been long-two weeks-before he realized that it wasn’t working for him, that he really wasn’t really paying attention to the woman, that he was looking, almost desperately, for traces of Jaejoong’s personality in the woman’s actions.
Now, after experiencing how life would be like if Jaejoong wasn’t by his side, he knew that he would do anything in his power to get Jaejoong back. But he couldn’t do it, especially since he didn’t know where he was, where he lived, where he slept, and above all… whether or not he was happier without him. Before, he had taken these things for granted, but if he ever had that chance to love Jaejoong again, he knew that these things would be cherished, held close to his heart like the treasures they were supposed to be.
He stared at the fountain he was standing next to. His legs had taken him here unknowingly, used to the road he and Jaejoong had traveled so many times. Even after the separation, he frequently came back here, knowing that the memories associated with the fountain would enable him to get through the next few days. Now, he tilted his head back and closed his eyes, savoring the warmth of the sun on his skin. He breathed in, enjoying the scent of the freshly mown grass and just-bloomed flowers. His ears filled with the sounds of birds chirping, sounds of water splashing as it emptied into the fountain, and sounds of people enjoying the day.
He opened his eyes, reenergized for the next few moments. He turned, and immediately froze. In front of him, running towards him, was Jaejoong. He was being pulled forward by the same woman he had seen with him in the supermarket. The scene in front of him was almost picture perfect, almost as if it had taken directly from a drama. The pretty woman dragging the reluctant handsome man forwards to the place she wanted to go, with a beautiful smile on the woman’s face and a resigned half smile on the man’s face. The only thing wrong with the sight in front of him was the fact that the man’s face was haggard, thin, tired, and pale. His hair was too long for his face, covering the face that was meant to astound the world with its beauty. But his eyes… his eyes were alight with life and were focused on the woman in front of him tenderly.
He felt-and heard-his heart breaking into pieces. Time seemed to slow down, turning black and white in his eyes. Everything around him mysteriously disappeared, leaving only Jaejoong and the woman-his girlfriend?-heading towards him. He saw Jaejoong’s eyes slowly come to land on his face and saw them widen, all while his heart was bleeding… bleeding tears of his soul. He saw his mouth form his name-Yunho...-and saw desperation, horror, and bewilderment war for control in his eyes.
He stumbled backwards, and time seemed to begin moving again. He ran away from them, hearing with ears attuned to Jaejoong’s voice his name being whispered… whispered with longing and regret. He ran blindly, not knowing where he was going.
He stopped running when he reached a place he loved. It was the Han River, resplendent with the shine of the setting sun reflected on its surface. Tears-not again-once more coursed down his cheeks. He screamed, screamed with all the agony in his soul, until his voice cracked and his throat was sore. He broke down, and fell onto the ground, sobbing, as he attacked the ground with his fists. He punched the soil again and again until his fists were bruised.
His entire being tired, he shut his eyes and ran through his memories of Jaejoong. The memories though, only served to fuel the anger, the determination stirring in him to win Jaejoong back. His eyes snapped open, determination flowing within him. He was the one who had been with Jaejoong for so many years; he was the one who knew Jaejoong inside and out; he was the one who had had the privilege of being loved by such a wonderful person. Last time, it was Jaejoong who had wooed him, now, it was his turn. It was his turn to show Jaejoong just how much he cherished him, how much he loved him, and how much he was worth to him.
He stood up, his new goal filling him with the most energy he had felt in months. And if Jaejoong didn’t accept him again… all he would do was wait, silently, by his side, for all of eternity.
