6 miles now to rent a movie that might not be there? 12 miles round-trip and no guarantee that they'll have what you want in stock. If you're driving an older car or one that doesn't have the best mileage, that could potentially be more than $2 of gas right there. And, yes, you might find another movie you'd be OK with watching, but it's just another waste of time (and gas since you'll have to return it, after all).
Or you can save your gas, make a list of movies you'd like to see, and let somebody else do the leg-work.
Also, since joining Netflix, I've visited Blockbuster with friends who still occasionally go. Store selection can seem pretty flimsy when online you can find ten times as much available. I don't find it sad or creepy. It's more energy-efficient, honestly.
Totally valid points. I say it's perhaps creepy because it's just odd to think how video rental stores are becoming just as much a thing of the past as your average decent music store. It makes me think of that supposed Earth historian character in "Voyage of the Damned" -- after he's done lecturing people about the great god Santa, he can start chatting up how people once searched for home entertainment!
