Personality: Cadogan is generally a quietly cheerful person. He takes most everything in good spirits and tends to look on the positive side of things. Most of all, however, he wears his heart on his sleeve--happy, sad, confused, he's an open book in almost any situation.

Much though he tries to be optimistic, he does tend to shy away from extreme risk. Cadogan is inherently amazingly cautious--he doesn't like dangerous situations, overly tall buildings, lots of loud explosions. Unless it's in an action movie, he doesn't want it in his life. It has a way of finding itself in, of course. What he can't avoid, of course, he can minimize. Want your immensely risky plan minimized into a more reasonable packet or your plan poked full of potential pitfalls? He's your man.

All those risks he just saw in your plan? He's fairly certain he's got a solution or two. Cadogan is fairly intelligent, no Einstein but quick on his feet. He approaches everything very methodically, like a puzzle he needs to figure out, taking everything piece by piece until it fits together. Much of the time, he enjoys thinking out of the box--there's always more than one solution to a problem, and he very much enjoys figuring out which of those ways is best.

Cadogan is only shy about one thing: touch. Although immensely important--it gets his attention, it factored hugely into his childhood, it signals an immense intimacy to him--it's difficult for him to take easily to it with strangers. He's fairly intent about his personal space and the fairly insistent need to keep to himself. This, of course, is part of what he loves about dreams. Touching isn't touching in dreams. It's a place of strange safety, despite being the ultimate form of contact when dreams are shared. The push and pull has captivated him into making a career of the thing, after all.

Likes: Crime novels, working with children, cigarettes, solitude, small towns, Lost, lakes, coffee with two sugars, gloves

Dislikes: Fried food, crowded places, spiders, flashy clothing, touching strangers

Background: Cadogan was born in a small hospital in Berlin, New Hampshire, to an Irish mother and Welsh-American father. He was named Cadogan for his paternal great-grandfather and given the middle name Eamon for his maternal grandfather.

His father was a foreign service officer employed by the United States. It meant a lot of travel even at a very young age. His mother did her best to keep him in smaller towns, away from the hustle and bustle of his father's big city life. As often as possible, she insisted they return to Llanfyllin, where Cadogan's paternal grandparents helped look after him. They were the first to notice something unusual about their grandson: he was incredibly delayed in language development.

The verbal delay was blamed on the constantly shifting languages his father's travel exposed him to until the age of 4, when audiometric screening revealed 55 dB hearing loss. Ever calm and understanding, his mother immediately began learning ASL (rather than BSL, partially sealing his future fate to live in the Americas) and researching schools for the deaf and hard of hearing.

It was a mixed blessing. On the one hand, Cadogan spent a lot of time withdrawn into himself. Despite his mother's constant efforts to provide stimulating environment, to pull him out of himself, to find other children in similar situations, he tended to flit off into his own little world. He liked to blend into the background, stay back from the brink of actual sociability. On the other hand, Cadogan became the epitome of an observer. When he wasn't wandering his own mindscape, he wasn't so much engaged in the world as constantly watching. Little things became big. Communication hinged on the way a person's lips curled or fingers trembled. The incredibly detailed facets which make human life were an open book to him.

Cadogan spent the remainder of his childhood in transit--to school, to wherever his parents were--and in transition--through various forms of AAC to finally settle on ITE aids. It brought him into contact with a good deal of technology. Most of it involved communication. He stayed on the cutting edge of long-distance interaction, of alternative means of getting his point across. He had settled himself in Belleville working at his former primary school(more often out of his hearing aids than in) before his father passed. For a time he looked after his mother, but she soon returned to her own hometown in Ireland. Suddenly he was adrift.

And then he met Ginia. And everything got a little more risky in the most wonderful way.
