physical appearance:
Kaycee is a girl who was built to be petite, and despite her travels the most she’ll ever be is a well-toned, small girl. She stands at a towering 5’3” and is a force to be reckoned with except she isn’t really. Her appearance is not intimidating at the very least, and despite having a decent small amount of curves to her muscles there is nothing that screams that this girl is a warrior powerhouse set to kick your ass. Mainly because she isn’t, she’s a stone-throwing mage. Her legs are toned from her travels, and her arms are well sculpted thanks to pelting enemies with decent sized magical stones for about four years. Everywhere else she’s just…relatively petite. She doesn't mind, however. Being of a smaller stature gives enemies less of a target to hit, and with her build resembling that of a runner's instead of a wrestler's, she's able to get out of hairy situations easily. She's made to fight at a distance and get away as fast as she can.
Her complexion is drawn from her mixed-race background, being of both black and white descent. Naturally she's light brown, but again her travels have darkened her skin tone quite a bit. She has little to no beauty marks, though on her hip there is a darker patch of skin that's simply a sort of birth mark. There's some scarring on her body, nothing too notable ...again, traits from traveling with a ragtag group in a magical medieval setting will give a mage a cut or two that hasn't healed properly. There's no "scar that looks eerily like a crescent moon over her left eye", though she does have a scar on the back of her left hand that she likes to say looks like an arrow....but it really doesn't and she really says it for shits and giggles. It's just a slightly raised line feathered at the end, an obvious knife wound. Her hands are rough and calloused, as are her feet, and on her right foot her pinky toe is a bit messed up and wonky-looking thanks to a run-in with a particularly hard rock. She's probably in desperate need of a good mani-pedi, but probably won't get them because hey...she wears shoes and digs around dirty rivers and oceans looking for stones for a living. It would be a waste. Her hair can be a bit unruly at times, sticking up at odd angles when she doesn't pay any attention to it, but usually it's relatively wavy and a dark, dark brown...sometimes bordering on black. She generally tries to keep it at shoulder length, though haircuts are missed every now and then, and even still she wears it up in a ponytail when she does heavy traveling.
As for a general idea...again, she's built to be athletic. She's no model, but she's not average either. She does look good, and she knows she's a conventionally attractive girl with full lips, a killer smile, nice brown eyes, and a small button nose. She's even proud of the slight cleft in her chin, even if past party members called it a manly trait. She likes it, thinks it gives her character, and her face would be pretty generic and boring without a somewhat strong chin. Shut up, she likes it. Her clothing style is relatively simple. Being a specialist mage who's part of a traveling party, she's meant to wear loose fitting clothes that are easy to move around in. Her attire is usual dark-colours breeches, black leather boots that nearly go up to her knees, and a shirt-like chemise coupled with a non fancy, not-so-binding bodice. Leather palmless gloves that only cover the back of her hand and half of her fingers are also a general accessory. This is subject to change, and she's prone to wearing sheer black cloaks to protect herself against weather, but something that is always characteristic of her wardrobe is a simple leather belt with a cheap-looking leather pouch attached to it, seen hanging from her left hip. The pouch always looks heavy and sags a bit...mainly because it's full of smoothed rocks of all shapes and sizes. She's never seen without it. Even when she wears modern-day clothes...because believe it or not, that does happen (and when it does she's a jeans and t-shirt sort of woman...a lot less detailed and fancy, I know), she has that belt on. Like I said, she is really never seen without it.
Well, of course once she wakes up in Abax she won't have that precious pouch of hers, but she can always buy another. She just...really liked that pouch, man.
world information:
The world Kaycee comes from are in fact two worlds. Or, two dimensions. However you want to put it, it's all the same because she gets to-and-from both worlds through random portals that pop up when you least expect them. Her home world / dimension is present-day Earth. Nothing abnormal about it. It's the Earth me and you come from, with cars and Americas and Europe and all those other wonderful countries and continents. Nothing's out of place, nothing is bizarre, and the historical events of this Earth are pretty much the same as her Earth. There is one minor difference, and that's the fact that there are random people wandering around on this Earth that have access to magic and those that have such access usually find themselves accidentally setting off portals and getting sent off into an entirely different dimension.
Usual fantasy cliched shit, right?
The dimension that these magic people come in contact with is called Elyon, and it is a world much smaller than earth and possesses three different continents: Shec, Bi'ayn, and Yol, with some random islands scattered around the ocean. Each continent also serves as its own country, they have their own kingdoms and each kingdom has their own laws of the land. The world and its continents are populated with a plethora of the usual fantasy creatures and races. There are elven-like creatures called Ilses, human-like races called Huus, and a rather short race that resemble dwarves though they're less hairy and actually look more like short squat elves than humans. They're called Na-Ilses and these fantasy names are pretty ridiculous and pretentious, I know. The creatures are also relatively generic. You have your dragons, your unicorns, your monster-like creatures that basically look like humanoid dragons that got kicked in the face a few hundred times and their wings ripped out of their sockets. There are mermaids, birds with human faces, humans with bird faces and feathers instead of hair who try really hard to be identified as a race though they're still seen as a species of animals. And then there are more earthly creatures like cats, dogs, horses, cows, sheep, pigs, flying squirrels, lizards, etc. etc. I'm really not going to list them all, but there's a healthy mix of the bizarre like the two-headed horse-like creature with a serpent's tongue and tail, and the mundane like a mouse who might be slightly larger than the average mouse but it's still a mouse nonetheless.
The kingdom of Bi'ayn is the land that most portals drop these magical humans into, and it's the most sophisticated and populated of the lands. While smaller than Shec and Yol, it's the most populated and the most technologically advanced...though still stuck in the medieval ages. But who needs electricity when you have magic? Almost all races have some touch with magic, at least enough to run most household devices and turn on oil lamps from across the room. And in fact, there is plenty of magic to go around that there are specializations for everyone. There are the usual elemental magics who can create fire, ice, and electricity and can summon the elements at their finger tips. There are some that need wand-like rods to harness their powers, and their specialization is less nature based and more mental based...levitation and the like. Then there are those like Kaycee who need rocks smoothed from either the rivers or the oceans to harness their powers, and need to be thrown at the enemy in order for the magic to work. While entirely silly, rock-throwing mages are actually a rare specialization, and few are able to master the art.
And of course, following the uber magic folk there are the usual people of warrior classes, archers...etc. etc. the standard medieval fantasy spiel. But this is getting rambly so I'll sum up the three different countries/continents in a more compact manner.
Bi'ayn : the most important country of this world. It is the centerplace of civilization and development. People from all walks of life live in this kingdom and its many cities and villages. Portals infrequently open up in the middle of the capital and spew out a human or two from Earth. This continent is known for its harsh winters and blistering summers, and there's a stretch of mountains that harbor dragons. In fact, it's the only continent that dragons live on. The areas that are not populated are heavily forested. The queen, Ophella, has the most authority in this world...and I guess she's a pretty chill queen. Kaycee's met her like, once.
Shec : the largest of the continents, and the least populated. Why? Because it's a fucking desert of rock and stone. The only things living here are a multitude of freaky monsters and small tribes of desert Na-Ilses who mine for precious salts. There are no traditional seasons, and there is a month-long wet season where flowers bloom and cover the rocky land with beautiful flowers. But other than that...yeah, mostly rocks and beasties. The Na-Ilses are pretty friendly people though, and tend to welcome travelers. Its capitol is located in the only area that has a decent supply of water, and the city is pretty small and pathetic. Magic specialists are hard to come by here. ...as-is good food. The kingdom is ruled by two brothers, and they're constantly bickering so the government here really gets nowhere. Which is fine, since most of the wandering tribes don't follow the government.
Yol : it's medium sized, mediumly populated, and is actually a really nice place. It's relatively tropical. Bi'aynians frequent this continent for vacational purposes. Ilses and Huus mostly live here with a Na-Ilses or two, and the kingdom is run by a King and a Queen who are paranoid fucks who don't give out their names to anyone. But who could blame them? While this continent is relatively peaceful and vacation-y, there are magical creatures lurking in the woods who can control someone if they learn of their name. So crime is pretty frequent here, but if vacationers keep to the beaches they're okay.
history:
Kaycee grew up like most Americans living in a suburb located in New York. Her family life was relatively normal. She had a mother who worked at a school, a father who worked as a doctor, and it was pretty sweet being an only child. Unfortunately, it seemed as though Kaycee was...well, cursed. Oh no, not that kind of cursed where she falls down stairs every other day, but more like...the doomed to play second fiddle to whoever she became friends with sort of cursed. See, Kaycee was born to be a sidekick. It sucks, yeah, but that's just the life cliche she fills. And being one of the few minorities of her community kind of made her the "token black friend" and she was treated as such. But she enjoyed her friends. Really, she was happy! Sure she felt left out from her school friends, and had a hard time connecting to the cousins on her mother's side of the family, but she was...cool with it.
Now, everything was normal for Kaycee up until she turned seventeen. She was doing pretty good in school, starting to look at colleges, had a decent boyfriend, and then one day...a computer blew up in her face. No big deal, the computer was a piece of shit, but the manner in which it blew up was...well, odd. It had felt as though there had been an energy flowing through her fingers, triggering the computer to explode and singe the ends of her hair. She had to get a haircut after that, and a new computer. Following that, technology because acting weird. Calculators refused to show numbers properly, the television got all wonky when she walked into the room, and when her cellphone was rendered useless it was the last straw. She was frustrated, annoyed, and starting to do horrendously in Calculus because life without a calculator in the 21st century is hard. She couldn't even hang out with her friends anymore during movie nights, that's how bad it had gotten.
Then one day walking home from school, a portal opened up, sucking her in. And that was that. No announcement, no warning, no big booming voice beckoning her in. There was just a purplish tear in the air and suddenly Kaycee finds herself face down on a cobblestone street inches away from horse shit. Lucky for her, the universe she found herself dropped in was used to random humans appearing suddenly and falling face-first into the ground. In fact, they had a response team made strictly for that, and before Kaycee even had the time to have a proper freak-out she found herself hoisted up and carried off to the castle.
It was there that she met a blonde girl named Ariel, who had also dropped in a few minutes before her, and the two of them were made to wait in a dungeon-like room. Kaycee tried to make conversation with the girl, but the girl didn't make an effort to make herself sociable in response. So the two sat in silence for awhile, and then they were ushered out and sent forth to meet the head of the response team.
The guy was some old fart named Treiyl. An elf. Well, not an elf, an Ilses, but Kaycee just stuck to calling him an elf. He explained to them that what had happened to them was an infrequent thing, but not entirely rare. There are people of their world who have been dropping in and out of Elyon for centuries, all of which had exhibited great amounts of magic and power. The usual chosen-one mumbo-jumbo shtick. However, he made a point that the last human to have dropped in had been exactly a century ago, and the last of the humans who had chosen to stay at Elyon died due to ~mysterious circumstances~
So basically what he had been getting at was that Kaycee and Ariel were special cases and were to stay in Elyon and train until a portal decided to tear open and bring them home again. Suffice to say, neither of them were exactly satisfied, but Treiyl explained that they had no choice in the manner and in short, it sucked to be them. They had to stay and train and only time and luck would get them back home.
So they trained. And they trained. And Kaycee and Ariel built up a rivalry. Ariel was an ace student, and their Huus instructor favoured her. In fact, Kaycee was almost certain the two of them had a thing going behind her back. A sexual sort of thing. But that didn't matter. It was discovered through months of training and practice that Kaycee was of a special sort of magic user, one that could harness energy through stones, and thus she moved on to training with an old mage who specialized in the same craft. Treiyl went on and on to say that it was a blessing from the Creators. That stone-throwing mages were of a rarity and that Kaycee's arrival was a symbol of a change of times. Ariel was only sub-par with her magic use, the general elemental mage that was a dime a dozen. So the fact that Kaycee was able to do something that was special made her feel ten times better about the fact that despite she had the stupidest-named class a magic user could have, she was still better off than Ariel.
A year passed. Kaycee learned more of the world and the way in which it worked. Her and her stone-throwing instructor, Iown traveled the forests of Bi'ayn and Kaycee coped with the idea that she may never return home. She made friends along the way, but since Iown made a point for the two of them to keep traveling, they never stayed for long.
Then, tragedy struck. Not just Bi'ayn, but the entirety of the dimension. A greater evil was starting to manifest in all three continents, and civilians were starting to disappear mysteriously, reappearing as ghosts and apparitions to friends and family. Kaycee and Iown were contacted by carrier pigeon that their services were needed by the Queen of Bi'ayn, and off they went to return to the kingdom. It is here that Kaycee is reunited with Ariel, and the girl had definitely went through a transformation of her own. She was taller, stronger, hair cropped short and had rose in the ranks of the warrior class. She had always excelled in swordplay and general combat, whereas Kaycee had been more magically inclined. It was...bittersweet to see Ariel again, and the two nearly exchanged hugs until they remembered that they had sworn some sort of petty rivalry.
The two had an audience with Queen Ophella, and she had told them that there had been a reason why the two of them had been brought here. They were the only ones who would not be affected by whatever this great evil was, due to the fact that they were not from this world originally. She then, however, directed her attention mostly on Ariel, telling her that she had called Kaycee to the kingdom so that the two of them could work together and traverse to Yol to see if they can gather information on the disappearances and the sudden rise of monstrous creatures and ghostly figures. And thus it became obvious.
Kaycee was living a fantasy cliche torn right from the storybooks, and she wasn't even the fucking Chosen One. Oh this was bull!
But she knew of the dangers and the grave importance of this matter, and kept her mouth shut as Ophella and Ariel had a little one-on-one with the general Chosen One spiel. Ariel was meant to lead a small group to Yol as Ophella readied the troops of Bi'ayn and contacted the leaders of the two other kingdoms. They had to be prepared and protected from these monsters that stole people away in the night and sucked out their essence to forever wander the world as spirits.
And so...the group was formed. There were about fifteen of them. Ariel as the leader, Kaycee as her annoyed supporting stone-throwing mage. There was Beilly, an elemental Na-Ilses who kept to himself. There were the triplet Huus: Hansu, Eloi, and Quare who specialized in archery. Eloi was the only sister of the three, and her and Kaycee got along well. Hansu and Quare made it a point to constantly flank Ariel and be all up in Ariel's space at whatever chance they got. There were others as well, some Ilses, one of those man-bird creatures who was actually really nice and useful despite being treated like an animal half the time, and a few others who had all the other stereotypical fantasy classes filled out.
So they traveled Bi'ayn, getting into misadventures, getting lost, growing close, losing members due to sickness or injury, gaining new ones, and all of this was over the course of a few nonths. (Somewhere around this time, Kaycee was sent off to
spinoffcity, though with the way that place works she was brought back as though no time had past and her memories of the strange place were gone). They did the usual side stories that most traveling groups did, solving local problems, and Ariel toting herself around as the hero of Elyon, ready to protect and defend the dimension and its people from its growing monster and haunting infestation, and even kick a dragon or two in the teeth for good measure. All the while, Ariel and Kaycee grew close. They no longer saw each other as rivals, but as bittersweet friends who weren't too sensitive to tear at each other's throats verbally every other day.
They were possibly even something more...at least in Kaycee's eyes. She often found herself stopping and staring at Ariel for prolonged periods of time at the campfire when the group settled down for the night. But Ariel and Quare had grown close, and Kaycee kept this thought to herself.
Following Bi'ayn, they took a bridge to get to Shec. The group had not been looking forward to this, for there would be an even lengthier trip with even less supplies, and Kaycee had to stockpile water smoothed stones onto one of the horses due to the lack of bodies of water in Shec.
And it is at around this point in their journey that Kaycee lies down to go to bed, and she wakes up in Abax. Well, in a body bag, but you know how it goes...
personality:
Kaycee is one of those girls that’s hard to tell if she’s being serious or not. She has a really bad habit of being playfully sarcastic and dry, and she rarely acts serious. Well, she’s capable of being serious, but she’d much rather be poking fun at you and nudging your ribcage awkwardly instead. Such is the habit born from having to play sidekick for most, if not all of her life. Having to be her friend’s “token” ethnic friend, and having to be the token sidekick to the hero of an adventure tale kind of takes a toll on your personality and there’s a desperate attempt to find yourself. That basically sums up Kaycee’s attitude and interactions towards other people. While she wants to come across as independent, sassy, and whatever else a hero wants in a sidekick brought along for the journey, what she really wants is validation for her presence and to be accepted as an equal. Her joking nature tends to say otherwise, but she really is a genuine person with cares and concerns, and she just wants to be accepted and loved just like anyone else. It was hard for her to grow up in a predominantly white neighborhood. While her father was a wealthy white doctor, she was particularly fond of her mother’s side of the family and due to her upbringing and limited time with those that shared her mother’s culture and overall social lifestyle…she never found herself to fit in with the side of the family she longed to be a part of. Her father’s side was mostly old people.
So yeah, it shaped her. She had to pretend that it didn’t bother her. She had to pretend that she was totally cool with sticking out like a sore thumb in whitewashed upperclass New York. Just like how she had to pretend to be cool with being one of the two only humans in some clichéd fantastical world of fantasy and magic, doomed to be the sidekick of the well-loved, beautiful, blonde Ariel. It’s an internal struggle of wanting to stand out on her own terms, but not in the way she does stand out. So she does so through an outward personality that can almost come across as obnoxious and desperate half the time.
That being said, Kaycee’s not inwardly bitter. Sure she can be a bit of a hothead and a competitive bitch, but she’s a genuine human being who cares a lot for her friends and family. She has a strong sense of loyalty and friendship, and she is in fact a sociable people person. She hates being left out, hates being left alone, and she just wants to surround herself with people who care about her just as much as she cares about them. It’s just a bit hard to get to know her due to her constant sarcasm and playful ribbing. Sometimes it gets a bit too out of hand and has the tendency to hurt someone every now and then. When that happens, Kaycee tries to play it off like it doesn’t bother her, but when in fact it really does. So it shouldn’t be a surprise when she tries to pass off some aloof apology. She does love her friends and her companions, and she does make an effort to be helpful and approachable despite putting up sarcastic barriers to persuade people there's nothing wrong. She's not a tortured soul, just someone who cares a lot about pleasing people despite having an attitude that comes across as nonchalant and uncaring half the time. She may be the class clown of the group, but she does have moments where she takes a deep breath and removes the edge from her voice, actually acting serious and wording her thoughts in a more linear manner. A joke or two might slip in, but those that get to know her find it really easy to differentiate her sarcasm from genuine seriousness.
She has moments where a bad attitude shines through, and can hold grudges for months at a time, but in the end she always softens up and swallows her pride. That's right, she does have pride, and she does have a relatively large cocky ego. Again, this ties in with her outward personality and her want to just fit in and play the hero for once. Not saying she's going to throw herself in front of a bullet and sacrifice her life, but more in the sense that she at least longs to play an important role in society. She wants to have a sense of purpose. Her friends and companions give her that sense, but as said, it's hard for people to get to know her easily despite a lust for companionship thanks to her sarcastic nature.
But she's trying to fix that. Though as she's about to get situated into an entirely new place with entirely new people, up go the sarcastic and witty defenses. In fact, she'll probably be a bit of a little shit for the first few months. Or year. She just loves to ruffle people's feathers sometimes, especially those that react to her sassy and ridiculous attitude.
abilities/powers:
As emphasized in her history, Kaycee is a stone-throwing mage. This particular class is unique that, whereas some magic folk are only able to tap into their magical power through wands or staffs, Kaycee is only able to tap into her magic through rocks. And not just any rocks...rocks that have been smoothed down over time by a form of water, be it a river or an ocean. The way this magic works is that Kaycee concentrates the flow of magic from within her very being, and it transfers to the stone. Then, the stone must be thrown, whether directly at the enemy, or at the enemy's feet depending on the spell she placed on the rock. Once it hits the ground or the target, the magic is released and the damage or ability is set free.
So yeah, just...think of it as Harry Potter and general fantasy mage cliches, but instead of casting spells with wands staffs or what-have-you, it's with rocks. She has a standard set of spells sparking at her fingertips, usual body-binding curses, paralysis inducers...and elemental stuff too like fire, ice, and electricity. For each spell, the rock glows a certain hue, and people with quick eyes and a good memory can oftentimes detect what spell she's literally chucking at them, and can counter it if they are of magic use themselves. Her spells are literally rendered useless without stones smoothed by water, and once the rocks are used they're used up for good unless she bothers collecting them and throwing them in a stream for a few days. But, might as well just collect them.
To sum up what she can do, as said: basic elementals (rocks that set parts of the body on fire when hit, rocks that freeze parts of the body, rocks that electrocute...) some curses that are meant to be thrown at the feet with the binding powers slithering up from the stones to ensnare or paralyze an enemy or two for a few minutes. Some curses even confuse the enemy into attacking their own allies...or themselves, but that's a bit hard to pull off seeing as she has to hit them square in the temple. And I mean her aim is good...but not that good. There are stones that can be thrown and it's magicked to go through you.....that one....doesn't really do any harm, it passes through the enemy like a ghost and it's like getting freezing water splashed on your face. There are spells that release fire ants when chucked to the ground and that one is a personal favourite of Kaycee...came up with it herself with the help of her instructor. She had been trying to get it to crack open to reveal a grouping of hornets...but fire ants do just nicely.
There are spells that act as timed rock explosive bombs, timed smoke bombs, timed stink bombs, and ones that even have the rock hopping around by your feet in a pathetic attempt to trip her opponent up.
No healing though. Chucking rocks never made healing spells available. Woops.
Oh also! Since she's gotten a handle on her powers, technology is less likely to blow up in her face! Which is friggin' sweet.
As for other abilities...her charming personality totally counts, right? Oh, and as said she's a pretty good runner and it's easy for her to out-run the average runner. She has killer endurance from all the traveling she's done. Oh, and good aim. I mentioned that she has good aim, right?
first person sample:
[VIDEO POST. HELLO NEW WORLD it's Kaycee's face taking up the screen. Can I get a woop woop? No? Alrighty then.
Her mouth is turned upward into a false, almost too happy smile.]
So! I actually never thought I'd see a technologically...normal-ish world. Waking up in a body bag aside...
[A pause, she purses her lips and bobs her head to the left for a second, gesturing hidden annoyance.]
Waking up in a body bag stripped naked with all the things I had on my person gone aside....yeah that's it there we go. Anyway, besides all that shit it's not half bad. Even with the creepy atmosphere and the near-emptiness of this not-New York. It's refreshing to not be surrounded by forests, and to have not one party member in sight. Huh. Yeah no this is nice. Hansu was kind of getting up my ass about how it was my turn to prepare breakfast for everyone when we all woke up so hooray, I'm off the hook!
[Sarcasm! But then her voice actually loses the strain of forced composure and is actually, legitimately composed.]
But seriously, this dimension travel, waking up in a "strange and unknown world" shtick is kind of been-there, done-that for me, so I'd actually appreciate a talk with whoever's in charge of this place so they can get the explanations over with. Already helping one hero save a dimension, don't need to play sidekick to another one.
......unless, this time I get to be the Chosen One. That'll be new. I'd be okay with that.
third person sample:
Okay, so she wasn't of legal age...but so what? Can't a girl sit at a bar with a glass of non-alcoholic soda (that's right mom who's probably wondering where the hell she's been for the past few years), she's just drinking soda. In an empty, forever-stuck-in-night monster infested city.
Huh, no wonder this place was practically empty. Actually it was empty. She had broken in. But shit, she didn't care. Kaycee simply grinned at the dusty bottles lined across the smudged, grimy glass and winked at her reflection before she took a big gulp of her room-temperature soda. Which she immediately spit out afterwards. Peh. Peh. Who the hell was keeping tabs on this bar and its expiration dates on soda?
Oh right, nobody.
...Seems like a brilliant idea to just sit around and spin on the squeaky barstool until she got bored with herself and her loneliness and left. The alcohol was tempting, oh how it tempted her. Back at Elyon there was no drinking age, and both her and Ariel used to take advantage of that. They'd drink, get so drunk that they'd start making the rest of their party awkward, and then pass out with a horrendous hangover that lasted only a few minutes because mages with a healing touch were a godsend truly. Or creatorsend.
She looked down at her half-full glass and made a face in her murky reflection. She still wasn't used to this dimension stuff, no matter how hard she tried to play it off. She had just begun to get used to Elyon and its weird cheesy fantasy tropes. And she was even starting to not mind Ariel's bossy attitude so long as Kaycee got a chance to stare at that beautiful face of hers.
But still...she wanted to go home. She had always wanted to go home. Sure, magic's great and all...even stupid rock-throwing magic that doesn't make any sense half the time. But she missed her mother, she missed her father...she even missed laughing at Izzy's stupid joke about the golfer and the peacock. She didn't even remember how that joke went anymore, that's how long ago it was.
She was what, seventeen at the time of departure? Now she was twenty. Hoo-ray. And if things went along a similar route around here, it'll be another three years and...who knows?
Maybe she'll finally go home. Or maybe she'll return to Elyon. Hard to tell which is home anymore.
case no: No preference! Assign away!
