" Key …." Jinki asked one afternoon while the were seated outside during recess on a small bench.
" Yes hyung ?" he asked as the corners of his lips twitched upwards in a small smile.
" Key , I think I'm in love with you . " he said turning around to cringe at the words that slipped pass his lips.
There was no reply just a small " oh " followed by a pregnant silence. When Jinki looked up , the boy had already left , leaving him , alone , on the small bench, during recess.
Jinki scolded himself for even having such a thought in his head. Key must have a lot of people dying to take him out on a date and be with him. He was that special in this sea of boring people. The bell rang, he got up threw away their half eaten lunch
into the bin sitting beside him and walked to class. Quiet and upset, mostly regretful.
Key wasn't in class when he got back. The books were all packed under the table , the owner gone. Jinki sunk himself into the chair and felt like the biggest loser the world had to offer. People always told him , ' never fall in love with a good friend , it screws everything up ' , now he knew why. But as he thought about it, Key didn't give him and answer. There was no " I 'm straight or I' don't like you " , all he got was a simple acknowledgment of his feelings, a simple " oh ".
He wasn't going to let this slip until Key outrightly told him he wasn't interested. Sitting back up and ignoring the class that had already started , he pulled out a small piece of paper from his pocket. The paper was ripped at different parts, and very much crumpled with endless fold lines. On the top it said

Jinki smiled to himself and began to cross out the things he had already done.

Smiles had been crossed out twice because he knew Key hated smiles but then, Key was starting to smile. Okay so he circled that.
Song. He could make another CD, but this time songs that he sung. Songs for Key, specially for Key.
He squeezed a list of songs , next to the word feeling very accomplished when he was done. Giving the list a one last look he frowned a littel and made small frustrated noise and cancelled out the header one more time.

Smiling to himself he stuffed the worn out paper into his pocket and turned his head to the teacher.
This was going to work.

Key didn't go home. He stopped by the park and sat himself on a bench under a overgrown tree, it gave him the shade he needed from the sweltering heat.
" I think I'm in love with you "
Like a broken record of Jinki's voice , the same few words were on repeat. It wouldn't leave. Shaking his head in hope to throw out the record proved useless. He slumped back into the bench legs stretched out , arms folded across his body with a small frown on his face.
Jinki was sweet , caring , protective, wonderful person. He was also a dorky , clumsy , geeky mess. He was cute that way.
The sad boy knew what he was feeling , he knew that Jinki meant more to him then just a friend, suddenly he felt bad for standing up and simply walking away during recess. But right then it came as a shock, Jinki was a shy person and he'd never have the guts to do something like that ….. well he was proven wrong. Still because he never expected it , he didn't know how to react.
Sighing he glanced at his watch. Class had already ended , if he headed back now there was no guarantee that Jinki would still be there. Not moving he closed his eyes and leaned his head back.
The return of gesture was going to have to wait till Monday, seeing that today was a Friday.

Monday at school was odd. Key was usually just in time or a tad late but Jinki was never late. However that day was Key stepped into class his seat was empty and untouched.
Maybe he was sick. Still an uneasy feeling seemed to settle in his stomach , churning with his breakfast .
Class started subsequently and the teacher called out the names as usual.
" Minho "
" yes "
" Key "
" yes ! "
" Jonghyun "
" Sir " Key asked
" Yes ? "
" You skipped Jinki's name , but he's not here by the way "
" I know "
" You do ? I don't "
" Key see me after class would you "
Key nodded his head. Maybe this time it was another pep talk for being rude or not coming to class late , he hated his teachers, and didn't need them anyway he was doing well in school regardless of their presence.
" Lee Jinki got into an accident on Friday " his teacher told him after class that day.
Key's face went white as a sheet, blood draining from every vein.
" You're kidding right , he's making this up to get back at me right ? "
" For what ? " the teacher asked very confused.
" Oh god " key felt his knees buckle under him and he crashed to the floor.
He didn't know what to feel, sad ? angry? guilty for walking away ?
If he hadn't left school , hadn't left JInki alone, he would be fine now.
" How is he ? " he muttered.
" He's at the hospital nearby from here. I'm not sure about his condition though "
Key got up , and ran into class , shoving everything into his bag and dashing out the door.
Jinki please be alright.

Key hated the hospital. The cold hard floors. The smell of disinfectant and overly clean air was horrible. He walked to the counter , his feet weak and numb.
" Hi sir , how may i help you ? "
" I'm..…..…. i'm looking for a patient . "
" his name ? "
" Jinki..….. Lee Jinki I mean "
" Let me check , right we've got a Lee Jinki , straight ahead turn right the fifth door. "
" Thanks " he muttered and followed in the direction she pointed.
Turn right he thought and he faced a long corridor. People were scattered here and there, some were patients some were visitors.

Then he stopped. His legs refusing to move. He wasn't sure if he was brave enough to see him and not crumble into pieces at the sight.

Stopping once more this time at the right door. His hand was shaky as he pressed the nob downwards.
The boy was lying on the bed , motionless, the air around him was still, time seemed to have stopped around him. It was silent with exception of the beeping of the machine next to him, the only thing that greeted Key with delight , because at least he knew Jinki was still alive.
Pulling a chair he sat down quietly beside the bed just looking. A pair of mangled headphones lay on the table beside him, underneath a piece of paper slightly stained by ……. blood.
" Key "
He snapped his head back to look at boy. He looked fine, just cuts and bruises here and there but more or less fine.
" heyi "
" I'm sorry " he whispered.
" what ever the hell for Jinki "
" for not turning up with today's gift "
" Its really not that important ! "
Jinki seemed to be slightly hurt by the comment his smile slightly fading.
" I mean you could give it to me another day. "
" Okay . "
" What happened to your headphones ? "
" nothing ."
" Really ….. "
Key grabbed the headphones and the paper before Jinki had time to react.
" give it back " Jinki shouted , well he tried to , failing terribly.
" No "
" Don't look at it alright " the wounded boy tried to reach out and grab the paper but missed .

" Hey I know what this is " key exclaimed. His face changing when he reached to the bottom of the paper.
Song. It was written messily and had yet to be cancelled out.
He looked at the mangled headphones, and the paper , then at Jinki.
" You were listening to your headphones when the car hit you "
" No… "
" you were trying to give me the next present , which was today ………. "
" Key , I "
" I walked away from you Jinki , you don't have to keep doing these things if anything I should be the one doing something for you for leaving you there on the bench "
" I didn't want to give up "
" You're just freaking luckily you didn't die "
" I know right ! " Jinki chuckled a little.
" Were you trying to sing a song for me ? " Key asked quietly.
" Kinda , but its okay if you don't want it , I mean I'm not expecting you to feel the same way "
" Sing for me . "
" What? "
" Sing for me , i want to hear it "
Jinki pushed himself up a little and sat upright. He reached over and took the headphones plug it in to the mp3 he had taken from the drawer.
He pushed a few buttons before handing Key back one side of the headphones, Key look at the headphones doubtfully before putting it his ear.
A/N - okay i know the song is entirely not shinee related but its a really nice song by 2am - This song. Go listen to it pleaseeeeee.
" You give me much more than that " Key whispered when the song finished. He leaned over and wrapped his arms around Jinki. " Thankyou for not dying " He wasn't very good with words obviously.
" Your welcome " Jinki replied laughing at the lack of words Key had. " Sorry I can't sing it now, my throat hurts. "
" Another day "
Key leaned in and pressed a soft kiss on to his lips.
" sorry for walking away , but I'm here now and I'm not going to go anywhere, I finally found a reason to stay in this godforsaken town. "
Jinki was thrilled.
" thankyou for making me smile Jinki. "
