so i'm back from the midwest!! it was fun- we visited indiana university, butler, university of michigan, and oberlin. and oberlin is my favourite of all the ones i've seen so far- topping eastman only because eastman has no opportunities for playing in pit orchestras. the only thing i don't like about oberlin is that it's in the middle of nowhere ( Read more... )

I totally agree that auditioning on viola would get you farther. Piano is harder. You know the petersens right? Well there's an example. It was easier for alex to get in on viola that katherine to get in on piano, and they're both fantastic players.

Anyways, finding a better teacher is always a good option. My mom finally made me switch from Darcy to Lisa, but now i luv Lisa, totally. She's an amazing teacher, even if she talks alot.

yeah... i think i might be switching over to lisa... does lisa give lessons in the summer? because i think that would be the best time for me to switch teachers.

getting a new teacher is actually not a bad idea, just to have other opinions... my piano teacher now isn't different from Mrs. Leonard, she just has different focal points. So essentially I have to pay attention to things that I never even thought about, like how my finger presses down the piano key. Which sounds really dumb, but it kind of surprisingly does matter.

yes, i know what you mean! the guy at oberlin talked all about varying the pressure of the fingers on the keys. it's really hard, actually.

yeah in the meantime I'm better at it, though sometimes the sound is still too "hard". Well, it's really good for composers like Brahms, Debussy, and Chopin, the lighter, more romantic sounding music.
